Hey isn't today the last day of school for many kids? Maybe he was just giving them one for the road for all the stupid things they're going to do over the summer.

Someone else already said it but welcome to ROK. Last day here and mine got hair cuts. The guy comes in with scissors and a bag and picks the ones he feels need a trim and cut one side of the back. They then have to go to the barber to get it fixed. He jacks them up pretty bad so they go around most of the day with one side of their hair screwed up.

Last week, a male Korean teacher walked into my classroom, yelled at two teenage boys, and escorted them to the hallway just outside the door within eyes view. Then I heard a smack and another smack-one smack across the head for each boy followed by a crack to the head with a stick. The Korean teacher first used his hand and laid it across the side of each of their heads, and then he used what appeared to be a drum stick used for the big drums. Shocked He proceeded to tower over them in a threatening manner while scolding them. After the smacks, I walked over to the door and closed it, because I didnt want the activity to distract the class. About a minute later, the kids returned to the class rubbing the sides of their heads. They looked in the mirror as they passed by it to see if they had a welt.

These particular boys are no angels, but I feel that the punishment was a little extreme.

Has anyone else seen similar beatings?

Child beatings are necessary in this culture. Accept it as a cultural aspect, and learn to ignore it. Soon you also, shall smack and beat children without even thinking about it.

Of course, that's the way it works.

I asked if I could beat them and was told absolutely not.

Actually I've noticed that, not only is beating accepted, it's also kind of expected.

My students actually laugh when I feign beating them, BUT they know I'm serious. Otherwise they don't get the message clear enough. It's hard because I've got this god awful friendly and femine face that just has this incredible aura of kindness that spreads miles. Irritating as hell when dealing with kids and trying ot show them I'm pissed off or mean business. Think about a rabbit that makes an angry face and it just comes off as cute. THAT'S the curse of my face.

Anyways, When I life a book to smack them they know I mean business. They sure as hell laugh it off, but it gets the job done.

Native English teachers are expected to demonstrate positive alternative methods of class control that Korean teachers can learn from as they gradually phase out corporal punishment.

Those who lack training should seriously consider taking a TEFL course, and those who are eager to hit students probably shouldn't be teaching. Many parents tolerate or even encourage Korean teachers to use some traditional corporal punishment on their kids, but hardly any would permit foreign teachers to do so.

There's always potential for abuse, and sometimes students are seriously hurt by teachers who go out-of-control themselves.

We had the PE teachers on haircut patrol this past week, making sure everyone's buzzed down before the summer vacation. All but five or six from every class I had, out in the hall with their butts in the air to get a nice smack from the love stick.

The thing is, this happens the last week of school before every vacation. They knew it was coming. The ones who avoided the smack were the ones who had gone to get their haircut just that weekend, because they knew what the consequences were. I guess most of the boys would rather rock their 'dos for a month and take the walloping. Their choice.

They don't get upset about it. They seem to think it's funny.
