In addition to my post on apostilled documents in Southern California, I thought I'd add a post on the Criminal Record Check (CRC) in California.

From my research, there are two options:

The first is you can go to a local police station. Keep in mind that you must have a STATE-WIDE background check. Some stations offer this, but most offer a "local" check. Yes, the letter does clearly state that a "local" check was done, which I found out after paying the $25 fee.

The second option is to go through the Department of Justice in Sacramento.

Go to the website, which is the Attorney General's website. However, the jist of it is you first need to fill out a Live Scan Form; you should have all the information readily available, e.g. Driver's License number. The purpose of the form, as asked on the top, should state for VISA/IMMIGRATION purposes. Then, you can look up places to scan your prints on the website.

Go to your selected place with your form; the fee is $20 for the DOJ fee and whatever your agency charges. I went to my local city government's office and paid $52 in total. The entire process is not painful and takes about 3-5 minutes; all it involves is scanning your finger prints.

The scan will electronically submit your application to the DOJ immediately. The website says that the normal processing time is 3 days, and will be received in the mail.

Note: You should most definitely receive a receipt after your scanning with a tracking/application number (I can't remember the exact term). In the event that you do not receive your documents in at least 7 days, you can contact the DOJ to find the status of your application with your number.

I tried going to a local police station (North Hollywood). They handed me a form letter to refer to the DOJ website. I went to the DOJ website and they had a list of people who do the "Live Fingerprint Scan". Some were public organizations (some police stations, not all, but required appointments).

I went to a passport photo place, they took my fingerprints on their machine, it was sent to the State electronically, I received my CRC a couple days later. There were different types of Live Scans. Make sure to specify for what purpose you need the scan (to teach in Korea).
