We are a democratic republic, not an aristocratic republic or a theocratic republic but we are very close to being an oligarchic republic...which is what Andrew Jackson tried to prevent. There has never been a decisive victory by the aristocratic/oligarchic republicans that finally and for all times crushed the democratic republicans, although they keep trying. We are now deep in the middle of the most recent episode.
Chances are the plutocrats will win again. After all they are masters of the politics of fear and certainly have the money to infuence, if not control, the outcome. But it is worth fighting them. The New Deal coaltion made great strides in combating, although not crushing, the power of the special interests...the big money boys that hired their brothers on the Supreme Court who decided that a corporation is a person and has free speech. Of course this gives the Board of Directors their own personal, private vote, plus the money chest of a corporation, and the 'vote' of the corporation.
In the 60's we won the idea of 'one man, one vote'. Maybe someday we'll make this more of a reality by eliminating the privilege/special power of the corporations. One thing that needs to be done is to stomp all over the idea that local governments are more responsive to local interests because regular people are too busy and too strapped for cash to take a few weeks off work to go to their state capitol to lobby for their interests. That might have been true when Madison was writing up the Constitution, but only true for the wealthy few like him.
I'm not an anti-capitalist. I think I'm a realist. When there are piles and piles of money to be made, morals and ethics go out the window. I have a vote in the government, so I support an active government. I have no vote in how a corporation behaves. I say: regulate the hell out of corporations for society's good. |
