This morning my school told me that because of swine flu I would need 7 days quarantine on my return from China for summer break. This would mean cutting my 2 weeks there in half, as they expect me to do this time during the holidays. I have already booked my ticket and am not prepared to change it. Does the school have any right to tell me to cut my holidays to allow for quarantine time. I'm not going to do it, but I was just wondering if anyone knew if the school can insist on this..

You will only be quarantined if you display flu symptoms.

Find the official information on this and present it to the school.

Tell them politely to f*** off, there's no such thing as automatic quarantine just because you went to a certain country, and even if you do get quarantined, they can't make you use vacation days for it.

Agreed. Jeeeeeesh........who do they think they are?? Will KTs be going into voluntary quarantine after returning from SE Asia or China? Will they *beep*.

Also point out the food they're eating is Chinese and wait for them to stop chewing and go all slack-jawed

Hogwan or public school? Public schools should know this is illegal. Hogwans are relying on your ignorance of the law.

Its public school. I'm assuming there is no official guidelines regarding this so they don't really have a leg to stand on

I think he could just produce his contract, which should state that he gets X amount of vacation days per year. Quarantine is not vacation. End of story.

There's none. Vacation is a contractual issue.

Don't say anything, or tell them anything about your plans. Take your vacation as you originally intended and deal with the consequences later. If they want you to quarantine yourself, it will be too late by the time you get back for them to do anything about it.

It's always easier to beg forgiveness, than to ask permission.

The consequence is this. You will get FIRED. Maybe not right away but later they can use it against you. My GF missed a plane and missed the first day of class of a new semester. I covered here classes and still months later they used it against her when they wanted to let her go.

Also expect to get money taken away from your pay check. They can be honest and minus a week that you spend sitting at home or they can be real jerks and take away a month.

If they are applying this to only foreign teachers, then it'd be discriminatory.

If your school did this, why would you want to work for them anyway?

The OP is public school. Has there ever been an instance of someone getting fired from a PS?
