Hey all,
So recently I thought I had a hagwon job lined up real tight in Bundang, and out of the blue yesterday my recruiter called me to tell me that the school hadn't gotten enough students and that they had closed down and didn't need me any more. Apparently I was a bit more lucky then the other teacher who was going there with me, he had arrived in Korea to find that the job he thought he had, he didn't. At least I'm still in the states with time to find a new one. Now he's high and dry.
So my question, how do I protect myself against a school's closing unexpectedly? Should I have a clause in my contract stating if they close unexpectedly, I get a plane ticket home? Is there any protection?
Thanks!

Sarahm, Welcome to Korea, where NOTHING is guaranteed, and foreigners are just a necessary but pesky business cross to bear for hagwons and their marketing staff.

You're better off back home.

By the way... Hi, oskinny1!

Ok while I can appreciate the cynicism here, some advice which would give me a modicrum of ability to avoid this particular danger would be helpful. I'm not looking for a guarentee, just assistance in how to recognize this possible danger....if such assistance exists.

Hi Sarahm,

From what I gather, that may not be such a bad thing. They already paid for your plane ticket there. Just take your documents and you shouldn't have any problems finding a different hogwan job since you are already in Korea. Someone else can probably tell you specifics about changing your visa information, but I don't think you will be SOL. Just find a different job. You will have the advantage of seeing it before you take a job.
