Yep... i've only been back for a month now.... and already I'm contemplating a flee (can that be used as a noun??) back to ol' Red.
Not sure if the xenophobia here is increasing... or maybe I'm just more aware of it now i'm no longer enthralled in a 'new country', but at least the chinese generally have an excuse (albeit weak) for their sometimes 'ignorant' behaviour regarding foreigners.
Korea has one advantage over china: freedom from internet censorship.
apart from that... ummmmmmmmm.... Oh, i guess the money is better here as well. Although that trend is changing...
Just to clarify my previous reply, no i do not see any future in this little insignificant place.
Strangely enough (and this is just to perpetuate the foreigner stereotype), even the women here don't seem as fine as I recall. Sure to be sure, they still do the whole short skirt and heels thing pretty well... but the princess prancing and artificial faces just doesn't do it for me anymore.
Bring back the natural chinese women who are actually, dare i say, more diverse and are not all cloned from the same factory. |

I've been in Korea since 1994 save a two-year break in that horrible city called Los Angeles. Korea isn't paradise but it's a lot better than other places, and this is shown by the numbers of people who leave Korea kicking and screaming vowing never to return but come back.
I have my complaints about this country but I choose to focus on solutions than vent. |

| I'm planning on heading over there for at least 4 years, assuming all goes well. Heck, if I like it enough there I might just become a lifer. I'll see what happens. |

| I've been here for nearly 2 months now and am enjoying the new experiences and a job worthwhile. Also like having money to spend on things I want but still being able to save some. I did a graphic design major and love having the opportunity to work on my own photography/graphic design projects in my spare time. I worked for the biggest web design company in New Zealand before I left because I didnt have creative freedom. I'm building up some experience in the graphics field for when I get a good enough opportunity to leave the ESL field. But for now im enjoying the experience here. |

I'm into my second contract and will be leaving within the next 10 months.
The xenophobia certainly gets to me on occassion and the feeling of isolation that comes from not being able to communicate with most people around me in a meaningful way....although I could study the language more if that were really an issue.
However, what gets me is not really being able to meet many English speakers here who I want to hang out with....I find a lot of people I meet are either somewhat off-kilter or only interested in getting drunk and acting like teenagers.
Next year I'd like to spend a couple of months in Thailand at a Muay Thai camp to get back into shape (sam gyup sal is killing me) before heading over to Berlin to do an internship with a charity and brush up on my German. |
