Wow, I can't believe this!!!!
Earlier today I got an email from one "Lee Yoon-hee", email addy [email protected]. This is a recruiter who noticed an earlier job request of mine (in which I specifically said I wanted work in Daegu). This recruiter offered me a job in Ilsan. I replied "why would I want to work in Ilsan when I asked for Daegu---are you stupid?" Granted not the most courteous of messages but I am sick of recruiters filling up my inbox with unwanted job offers.
This is what I just found in my inbox.

Geez...I just sent e-mails to all the teachers.
If you're not interested in, that's it!
Watch your mouth!
I can imagine how horrible teacher you are...
We don't need a sassy teacher like you at all.
Go back to your country, you bananas! (Kyopos!)
First of all why would this piece of crud recruiter just assume I was a Kyopo, second, what an asshole to make a comment like that!!! Anyone want to write to him/her/it and let them know what you think, feel free! |

The choice of words is kind of cute and funny.
Honestly- it makes me laugh.
I know what you mean though. A person says- "Job wanted for Korea" and you get 5 Taiwan and China offers. A person says- "Job wanted for Taiwan" and you get 5 Korean, 3 China, and 1 other offer.
I posted for specific cities in Korea I'm interested in and I got an offer for- believe it or not- Turkey. hee heee
I would like to see a complaint department at Dave's where someone using the eslcafe email logo would email people who ignore which cities/countries we are inquiring about.

You treat someone rudely and then are surprised when he is rude right back to you? What did you expect? You called the guy stupid! |

UMMMM...yeah. Dutchman you missed the point. By a mile. I have NOOOO problems with someone calling me stupid. Or a bad teacher. Or basically returning insults in kind.
But it is one thing to attack someone's teaching ability, posting style, IQ or lack thereof, and completely different to say shit like "we don't need your kind around here".
I was just appalled that this Korean would turn on his own kind (well half his own kind) with that kind of comment.
Would you approve of people calling my daughter a half-breed if I called them stupid first? That's essentially what happened. |

I'm leaning towards Corporal on this one- after all - he is the customer. It's not a good way to groom a business or business name by calling customers names. I'm just curious why bring in the whole issue of Kyopo? I knew there were feelings- but I didn't know they had intensified to that degree. |

First off, you came out as hostile just because someone offered you a job. You initiated the flame war. It wasn't as though they were saying "hey, I've got something to sell you."
Second, to suggest that the use of "bananas" was racist I believe is incorrect. It would have been singular "you are a banana!"). However, since it was plural it would suggest that the phrase was meant to be "you are bananas" which is a childish way of saying you're crazy.
Stop seeing racism where there is none. You insulted someone, they insulted you back. The story ends without drama. |

Gord- the issue is using a term as an extreme negative- Kyopo- as though it were "the finger."
The issue isn't bananas.
There is a double insult in the term:
1. As though persons not fully Korean are something dirty.
2. Giving someone the verbal finger at other parties expense (Kyopos)
So, yes- he should be upset on two accounts. And- we don't know how full his mailbox is with offers that have nothing to do with the city he posted for. It's a frustration in futility. If we're looking for who "started it"- I don't think that a customer asking for a burger and getting a shake should be expected to not get angry to a certain degree. |

Your viewing "Bananas" as being a racist term. If it was racist, it would have been singular. Given that it's plural, in my opinion it's more likely given that the phrase was suppose to have been "you are bananas" which implies craziness which fits with the theme of the email and the initial hostility given by the original poster.
Plus the insult says the person is probably a bad teacher, is sassy, and should go back to their own country. Last I checked, "kyopos" don't exactly fall under "go back to your own country" as such a phrase refers to returning a person to their country direct or ancestorial origin, in which case it would be more correct to tell someone of Korean ancestory in the US to return to Korea.
It just doesn't add up that the email was racist. |

Telling someone who is part Korean to go back to their country is like telling an African American to go back to their country- can you see this is meant to be a huge insult? America is the African American's country- period. It insults the poster and Kyopos (Those who are not "fully Korean" in every sense of the word). It's also like saying- "Kyopos- you have no right to be here in Korea."
I don't know if you have rubbed shoulders with Kyopos- however, because they look Korean and don't sound Korean- some are treated extremely poor by some citizens of South Korea and feel deeply hurt by it all. So, the recruiter seems to be indicating a hatred/disliking of Kyopos. Again- it's an insult to two parties.
(I don't think that the post was underlining the term "Bananas")- we can see that by the title of the post. What do you think Gord? |

I'm reading the (Kyopos!) as a comment added by Corporal to try and explain what they thought the "bananas" insult was. It appears you're reading it as though it was part of the email from the recruiter.
So Corporal. Which one is it? Is (Kyopos!) original or editorial?
If it was included in the email, then it was racism. If it was added by Corporal, then it's all just a huge misunderstanding from Corporal seeing racism where there was none.
Mystery solved.
Though the part about the African-American thing is backwards. It's as though an African-American returned to their native country in Africa, at which time the local citizens in Africa said "Go back to your country!". It doesn't make sense. Which is why I pointed out that a Korean citizen telling a person of Korean ancestory returning to Korea "go back to your native country" is backwards, as they are returning to their native country. |

It is annoying to apply for one place and get offers for another, but its not such an injustice. the "delete" icon is easy enough to hit, in fact thats an easier task than sending back something childish. None of that changes that he did take it to a lower and nasty level with that vicious remark... it is a good thing that you decided to stop there, and you didn't do anything like post his email in a public place and invite people to flame him... he might then feel justified in doing that to you!
Do the mods usually allow this sort of thing? Seems a nasty precedent to set, given the temperments that often appear here... perhaps that could be a new thread - people who have been wronged and the emails of their villains... |

I didn't edit the email. Why would I do that? I have better things to do than go LOOKING for racism. God knows it exists enough as it is. The original post said "you bananas (Kyopos)". If it had just said "bananas" I might have assumed he was just calling me crazy too. The fact that he added Kyopos so that I would be clear that he was talking about mixed people, leaves no room for doubt.
I still don't get how when, I had already responded to his first email declining the offer, and he sent the same thing for the second time and I called him stupid, I somehow *deserve* to be the recipient of a racist comment like that? Are all insults created equal?
And denz, BTW, your little contribution was really pathetic. It's too bad you didn't have some genuine wit to offer. |

This thread isn't even worth a reply.
The Korean director thought Corp was an ***hole, plain and simple. He tried to come back with his best Konglish.
Happy Hunting.

Uh yeah, you probably did deserve it. You broke civility first by calling him stupid. He then insults you back and you have the nerve to get outraged? What planet are you from?
