The motorcycle I've been driving the past 8 months was never registered. The shop owner that I bought it from gave me all the papers, and I signed it and everything, but I never got around to doing the registration. I want to sell the bike to someone else now, but I've heard that there might possibly be penalty fees charged. I want to be up front with the person I'm selling it to, so that there aren't any surprises waiting for them.

Does anyone know about the penalty fees involved with not having a bike registered for about 8 months?

There may not be any penalties.

I recently bought a bike from somebody who'd never registered it. He bought it in Seoul in April of 2002, rode until about February of 2003, then let it sit for the rest of last year. (Some parts and stuff got stolen and he never replaced them.) I bought it from him in December and got all the paperwork from him, including the receipt from when he purchased it.

I took all the paperwork to the vehicle licensing office in Ansan and got it registered without any problems. The only catch is, to get it registered I had to have it insured. (No biggie, only about 80k for a year.) I just had to show the bike's papers, my proof of insurance and my alien card and I was all set. Even though the bike hadn't be registered to anybody for about 20 months.

I think they're more concerned with all the paperwork being there than they are with any "ownership gaps." As long as they can fill out all the forms and do everything by the book, they're happy.

Oh, depending on which forms you signed from the dealer, you may need to go to the vehicle office with the new owner, just to make the transfer less problematic. (If one of the forms you signed says you're the owner, they may wonder why another person is trying to register it.) Drawing up a simple bill of sale from yourself to the new owner would be a good idea too.

Thanks for the info Mitty. I appreciate it. I have the paperwork from the dealer, with my name all over it, but never processed it, so yea, I might need to discuss this with the dealer, since I'll be gone before the guy buying it can get the insurance.
