I have to write a statement of religious background for a job application as a professor at a university. How important is that for my job application? what is expected of me? I am officially registered as a Lutheran but I do not believe in it any longer. I would consider myself an atheist. Is that a great problem? Thanks for any help! |

Well, you don't mention it, but I'm assuming this is for a Christian university?
I don't have any answer for you, but that bit of information would probably help anybody else who takes a stab at this! |

The university is called Yonsei University. Is that a religious university? From what I have read online, that is not the case |

Personally, whether it gets you the job or not, I would tell them it has no bearing on how you teach, the grades you give, and that it's simply none of their business. |

Just write 'not applicable'. If you think this is anything other than gathering statistics report it to Korean labor. Many companies ask these sort of questions, but usually back home they do this on a separate sheet not intended for those who interview you. Unfortunately Korea has very discriminatory employment practices(I assume you are tall, white, blond, blue eyed, young female, slim, pretty faced, not missing any parts). Religion should have no bearing on your employment here.
Although I find writing 'Jedi' gets me in most places. |

Yonsei is a private university with a Christian background. I don't know anything about their hiring practices, but even in the US, private institutions are allowed to select hiring candidates based on religious background. Saying 'it's none of your business' or 'non applicable' is a surefire way of NOT getting your application taken seriously. I would just write the statement honestly and if they don't select you because of it, you probably wouldn't want to work there anyway. |

According to their web site:
Quote: |
Yonsei University serves as the alma mater (fostering mother) of all arts and sciences to nurture leaders who will contribute to society in a broad, ecumenical spirit of Christian teaching epitomized in its motto of "truth and freedom." |
It's a private, Christian university. Plenty of private church-run schools around the world hire those of other faiths or even no faith. For example, those wishing to work for Brigham Young University are informed:
Quote: |
Do I need to be LDS to work for BYU?
No. However, all employees are required to agree to maintain LDS standards as defined by the Honor Code and the Dress and Grooming Standards.
If I am not LDS, do I need to fill out the Current Bishop/Clergy section on the application?
Yes. Please fill out each question in this section regardless of your religious status. If a question is not directly applicable, please answer "N/A." |
As the poster above mentioned, informing them honestly of your beliefs is the best option. |
