I'm looking into buying a small laptop because I'm going to need one that I can carry around a lot in the near future. My current one is 4 years old (still running well) but battery life is non existent.

My criteria are:
long battery life
low weight: around 2 kg
somewhat decent specs
need a dvd drive (which rules out netbooks)

From my research, it seems lots of companies are offering 13" laptops which fulfill these criteria. I've narrowed it down to the following models:

Samsung Q320: Great reviews, battery and screen
LG E310: Very light and good specs
TG ES 301: Cheaper and decent specs
HP DV3: Great reviews and specs but expensive

Of course, I'm open to other suggestions.

Does anyone have experience with these types of laptops? Any recommendations? Thanks!

Nowadays computer makers all use the same or similar parts. They just design the case that goes around them.

My personal advice is to not get wrapped up in brand-names and just get the best spec you can for a price you're willing to pay.

I have an MSI wind netbook and have never missed the DVD drive even once. You could get a separate usb DVD drive. Are you going to be watching dvds on the go?

I didn't really want a Macbook Pro and Sony Vaoi were out of my price range of about 1 million for the specs I wanted.

In the end, I followed eamo's advice and went for an Asus F6a which cost me 1.1 million.

Specs:
Core 2 Duo T6400
250GB HD
13.3" screen
1.95kg
3GB RAM
DVD-R

The weight was one of the main selling points for me. It also has a pretty cool alternative operating system which boots up in 8 seconds and allows you to access Internet, Skype and music/pictures.

I only got it yesterday, so we'll see what happens!

On a related note, we now have 2 out of date (circa 2005) laptops, 1 Toshiba and 1 Samsung. Is there anywhere to sell them for parts or get any sort of money for them?

I bought a Macbook, upgraded the ram to 4gb, the hard drive to a 500gb 7200rpm and added a USB mouse and hard shell all for 1.5M about 6 weeks ago at the L'Park mall.

I know you're looking for a 13 inch notebook. Perhaps consider Lenovo's new S12, which has a 12.1 inch screen.

It's $429 for the 1.30ghz VIA nano processor, while the 1.60ghz Intel Atom processor version costs $499 and can handle HD 720dpi video.
