I have been thoroughly unimpressed with the public school scene and I look forward to finishing my contract next month. I've checked uni salaries, but they are too low. So it looks like my only other option is to go back to hagwon hell... unless there are other types of jobs worth considering? I prefer to stay in Busan, by the way.

Only one I can think of is television. Do you have the talent/commitment/ego/conchas?

OP, mind sharing what you didn't like about your experiences in a PS?

I have none of the above. Looks like there's a hagwon in my future!

I'll try to keep my comments to a minimum, since I don't want to start a pro- vs. anti- public school war going on these forums. For now, let's just say that public school contracts are becoming less favorable as they keep chipping away at the things that used to be benefits of working at a public school. The move towards unpaid camps really pushes it over the top.

How about an adult hagwon such as Pagoda or Wall Street.

Welcome to Korea! We welcome foreigner teacher people with open arms, and closed hands!

Yeah, they're great if you like working split shifts for the first few months -- or even the entire duration of your contract.

You know the oh-so-attractive drill: Arrive at school at 6:30AM, begin your first class at 7:00; have a few hours off after lunch, and then resume teaching in the afternoon, finishing at 9:00-10:00PM -- and then report for duty again at 6:30 the following morning?

Hagwon newbies get the worst schedules.

And of course, no housing is provided for adult hagwon FTs.

Actually, nobody works split shifts at Wall Street. Full-time teachers all work an eight-hour shift (2pm to 10pm or 6:40am to 2:40pm for example) where they will teach up to six 55-minute classes.

Ok, thanks for clarifying. It seems Wall Street might possibly be the one and only exception to the split shift schedule policy for new arrivals.

What about housing? Are they the exception to the "no housing provided" contract feature as well?

Outside Seoul, yes. Teachers can choose the apartment they want to live in and Wall Street will arrange everything.

In Seoul, no. Wall Street will go with teachers to find an apartment and put down 10 million won key money, but the teachers have to pay the monthly rent.

Thanks for the follow-up info. That's certainly better than what I encountered with my hagwon in Seoul. They promised in writing, that they would assist me with finding housing, especially because I was thrust into teaching 8 one-hour classes a day the very next morning after coming to Seoul (arriving at school at 6:15) for 5 days a week, plus 4 one-hour classes on Saturdays.

When I tried to hold them to their pledge (producing the written statement they sent me, of course) they finally found a very low-level person -- who was basically working as an errand boy -- to accompany me. He had a horrible attitude (told me that he hated working for the hagwon leaders), and so I continued the search on my own without future "assistance" from the school.

PS-- the disgruntled housing "assistant" walked out a week later.
