Very scary story about a female hagwon teacher from South Africa- especially about the police. No one should face this kind of apathy from the police.
Every foreigner in korea and those even thinking about coming to Korea should read this.

though I agree it's important to be aware of what occurred don't you think the thread title is questionable?
and wylies, curious: if someone is thinking of coming to Korea, should the fact that a person was raped make them change their mind? or are you claiming with absolute certainty that westerners cannot/will not receive justice under the law here? |

Ah, nothing about the actual story but you wanna talk to me, eh? Gotcha.
OK- Why should foreigners in Korea and those thinking about coming to Korea know about this kind of situation? How about PERSONAL SAFETY ISSUES and POSSIBLE PROBLEMS WHEN DEALING WITH KOREAN LAW ENFORCEMENT WHEN REPORTING VIOLENT CRIME. Are those important enough for you, nightsky?
1) Everyone should be aware of this situation because many foreigners think that there's no violent crime in Korea or that the Korean police will take complaints seriously. In case you don't know this, many Koreans have problems with how lazy and apathetic the Korean police can be.
2) Foreign women should understand that even though Korea may seem safer, they still have to think- safety first- and lock doors and windows and have a number they can call for help- even if it's a friend who speaks Korean.
3) Everyone (women and men)should understand how things work at Korean police stations and the importance of having an emergency contact to help them who speaks Korean.
4) Everyone should understand the importance of preserving evidence at a crime scene which may involve sealing items in plastic bags, taking pictures, and going to the hospital for a physical exam.
What suggestions do you have, nightsky?
What happened to this woman is horrible and everyone hopes she can find justice against her attacker. |

I have sometimes wondered what that would be like. Imagine a hagwon seriously mistreats some foreigner. The waygook mafia shows up in ski-masks with baseball bats and bashes the hagwon to shreds, while breaking the boss's leg.
Or what some foreigner was raped by some Korean, and she was ignored by the local police? Could she somehow contact this mythical mafia to seek revenge?
What kind of impact would such a mythical mafia have on Koreans? Would it scare hagwon owners into being more civil?

On her facebook discussion page it says the guy cuffed and raped her. Hope he goes away a long long time. I'd be surprised though. |

Sure. Just think of the possibilities. No more stomping from your neighbors above. No more construction idiots making noise at 6am. When transferring subways, no more body contact if you are a visible foreigner, and if it does accidentally happen, expect bows of apology and offerings of money.
I used to teach a private to a girl who's father was a 'gangster' . The story goes that one day their downstairs neighbor came to their door and went psycho on the mother claiming the kids were too noisy. When the father heard of this, he along with two of his associates paid them a visit. The downstairs husband profusely apologized and offered them cash to please leave and promised to never bother them again.
All we need is for word to get out.
Problem is most teachers are too cheap to pay for their services. |

This is pretty outrageous.
I hope he gets more than sued. He better get jail time and castrated.
I've always believed castration is a proper retaliation for rape. |

From the facebook posting it appears the suspect is in custody and his family are offering the victim compensation money.
Ideally this, and numerous other cases of crime against foreigners should be given maximum coverage. Translated into Korean and posted on Korean websites.
Koreans have to start being made aware of how foreigners are being victimised in this country and that we are overwhelmingly not the drug-addled criminals as portrayed. |
