What kind of insurance should one get if having a baby? I hear there is pregnancy insurance, but also baby/kid insurance? Are they one in the same? I thought there was pregnancy insurance offered that would cover the kid up until the first few months after birth or something, if there were complications?

My wife is pregnant, and I told her a friend suggested pregnancy insurance, but she's looking at policies that cover the kid for 5, 10, 15 years... isn't that a bit much?

What suggestions do you have?

Your wife should be covered under National Health. For the first month or so your baby will be covered under the mother, then once you register the baby, he or she will have their own coverage. As far as life insurance etc, I spoke with AIG and they said that you couldn't get coverage for a baby until it was at least one. We have a family plan, which will include my second daughter once she turns one. All the plans seemed a bit expensive for what you get, compared to back home anyway. I wanted to get a lot of coverage in case something happened to me, but the most I was allowed to get was 300 million. I was told the bigger policies were only for executives. In my opinion 300 mill doesn't go too far. In Canada you can get policies for at least a million dollars, and the premium is half of what it is here.

We got some coverage and it paid itself already. I recommend it.

Especially if your wife gets a C-section, you'll need it.

As I have heard, this information is incorrect.

AIG, an American company, may not offer such insurance in Korea, but Korean companies like Samsung and Hyundai do. You can insure your child beginning at a younger age than that, and as I have heard, there is some form of pregnancy insurance specifically there to cover what national insurance doesn't.

Ilsanman, what did you have?

Sorry, but I'm unclear about what information you think is incorrect.
I hope this will clarify what has been my experience.

-My wife and I used National Health Insurance to have both our children
-Both my kids were initially covered under my wife's National Health
-We now have a plan with AIG for life and extra coverage insurance
-my 2nd daughter isn't covered until she is 1.

I was speaking specifically about my experience with AIG. We had both kids at a General hospital, c-sec, and a 4-5 day stay. The total worked out to be around 700,00 each time.
I didn't find any info on Hyundai or Samsung, but perhaps that is the way to go. I know natural births at a general hospital are quite affordable.

Good luck with the pregnancy!

My wife just got insurance for our baby. We will pay for the next 15 years and the baby will be covered until it is 20 years old. I think this is a good idea because our child will be covered for a long time. So, if you are planning on living in Korea that whole time, then this would probably be your best bet - I think. If you are planning on leaving Korea, then it would be better to get a shorter-term policy.

My wife said to search for 태아보험 and take a look at the offers.

The most excellent fact about Korean insurance is that they give all (or most?) of your money back after a certain number of years, at least our plans do this.
