So what is it?

For some reason I have been looking at faces. What is it that makes one face pretty/handsome? If you think about it there is not much difference between faces. Millimeter differences in nose eye and mouth placement.

So what is it that makes some one pretty/handsome?

A clear complexion, symmetrical facial features, straight teeth. Fairly uncontroversial.

There's obviously a correlation between being young and healthy and being considered attractive.

Symmetry, baby. It's all about symmetry. Good features, helps too. Girls with small noses, narrow chins, clean aquiline mandibles, clear skin, thick, lustrous hair, full lips, wide eyes. All up to a certain degree, of course. They say--that is, those diabolic scientists--that men tend to like the same kinds of women, but women have a much more diverse range of preferences. Evolution at work. Nubile women and generous men. That is the way of the world.

Well, symmetry is what you usually hear when talking about physical attractiveness. I don't know about the "good features" you mentioned. Angelina Jolie's lips are a little too full for me.

Without being completely superficial one can dress in a way that is attractive and boosts their confidence which in turn boosts their positive attitude; and, that's attractive. I'm not suggesting that it makes up for goblin teeth, pot bellies, foot cheese, body odor, and a face full of pimples; but, attitude does count for a lot.

Alcohol consumption and dim lighting play a big part.

There are actual mathematical ratios of facial features that play a big part. Of course we had to evolve that perception, looking pretty has both health and mating/success benefits.

Waist to hip ratio is huge in women, as is shape of face in men.

Of course these are first impression issues, they make little difference as time goes on and you interact with said person.

I've long theorized what makes someone beautiful.

Since it can't be packed with a perfect metric and it varies from person to person (but not as widely as we would think)

I believe it's a deep instinctual development. For the most part, we CAN judge a person by their looks. We can tell if someone is pushover, and more an ass, or if someone is more manly or feminine. We can even tell sometimes if that person is more intellectual or not so.

I believe, our genetics is coded inside, some of it becomes apparent and manifests itself into our physical features (like down syndrome). This is common in the Animal Kingdom as certain animals have more vivid colors to represent what their social standing is. (birds)

Somehow, we are predeterimined at birth to be coded for some purpose, either to be intelligent, physically superiority, or workers. All with some purpose. Society needs EVERY role to operate, which is why we give birth to even workers or "drones". If every child was born physically superior, we'd have no one to do important intelligent decisions. vice versa, we'd die to bears or something.

Babies have been shown a variance of faces and babies very often choose the more attractive and feminine features. I think they have an innate sense of who are the caretakers in human society and who will take care of them. The mothers of society, it would help them survive, instead of dawdling over to the pissed off and aggressive men of society who might chew them out.

I think it's natural adapted instinct to choose attractive people, because attractive people SOMEHOW (we don't understand why yet) will benefit survival. Usually we think of them as nice and benefiting us in some way. Maybe it shows they are generous?

This is all just theory obviously, but I think it's an entertaining one at the least.

It's also kinda strange how one person will consider someone pretty yet another won't have a bar of them.

What my korean friends find attractive and what I find attractive are completely different.

Minor differences in the shape of eyes, nose and mouth make so much difference

Oh, yeah. On the cheeks. And don't forget chemistry. The number one reason someone is elevated from pretty or good-looking to something special. Ever been on the subway, people watching casually, and you catch the eye of a pretty young thing? And you know right away that she is into you once you make eye contact. There is that buzz...
