|
|
We are a couple from UK and Canada (I'm English, my girlfriend is Canadian) and we met while i was on a work visa in Canada. We really want to stay together after my visa expires and are interested in both teaching abroad together for a year.
Here are the potential pitfalls: I am a university graduate and native english speaker so i imagine i wouldn't encounter too many problems. My girlfriend is halfway through her degree in Canada and hasn't completed it as such. She does however teach a local class once a week in a nearby school. She is also considering getting a tesol certificate in the meantime, would this help her situation? Realistically, does she have any chance of being able to join me? We are hoping to around Jan time if this matters?
Would it be easier to get in other countries rather than Korea. We really want to do this and get it sorted soon. Would appreciate any help you can offer! |

You find a job - she comes with you on a 6 month B2 tourist stamp (privilege for Canadians).
Bring proof of HER undergraduate studies and she can probably ;land an internship (with work visa) with one of the provincial education offices (Gyeonggi).
She won't make as much as you (as little as 1/2 actually) but she will be legal and you will both be working and she can take the housing allowance instead of the supplied apartment.
I just hope that the 2 of you can adjust to living in a shoebox (the average size of a studio apartment over here.)

I don't have it right now, but she's about to start her 3rd year of a 4 year degree course in september. She's been teaching in her local school for over a year. Her grades are usually high too. I can get her CV if you think it would help? After speaking to some recruiters it looks like she'll need a certificate in tesol if she hasn't completed her degree yet |

Tompatz- Do you think it would be a whole lot easier for us if she did a fairly quick tesol course between now and january? |

The TESOL wouldn't mean much unless she has her degree in hand.
But don't worry, Canadians can get a 6-month tourist visa that is easily renewable by going on a weekend visa run to Japan. Or once you have some money saved up, take a weekend trip to China, Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, where ever Canadians get visa exempted.
As for private work, you're better off coming here first and get things set up before she arrives. While you are here, you can look into the private ESL job market- it is really risky, but if she wants to work while she is here, she can do it.
Or the more sounder option would be to let her stay in Canada and finish her degree. Upon being handed her degree she can land a job where both your combined incomes will greatly help you save money for travel around Asia and other places. |

Yeah that would be great man; then the board's membership can offer you more informed advice. I am sure we will put our heads together and think of something. Just cut and paste it. |
