Last Friday I went to a savings bank (I'll admit, it wasn't one of the large ones, but still...) and asked to open a savings account with Internet banking. I was promptly told that foreigners could open accounts, but Internet banking wasn't available. When I asked her for the reason (in Korean), her justification was simply "We've never offered Internet banking to foreigners." As my intention was to set up an automatic deposit of x million won per month for a year, not being able to have Internet banking kind of defeated the purpose. I wasn't going to tramp across Seoul every month to deposit money in person.
Aside from credit cards, cell phone plans, and loans ... what have you been denied as a foreigner?

I wasn't denied satellite TV service, but the rules they applied to foreigners shouldn't fly if brought before their Consumer Protection Board. Things like you must sign a three-year contract, and you must pay for the entire thing upfront. Thanks, but no thanks, SkyLife!
I already had a dish installed in the apartment by the previous tenant and when they saw it they wanted to take it back (this, after telling me about the "wonderful" foreigner deal I mentioned above). They were quite upset when I refused and threw them out of the apartment. Sold the dish later to a Korean co-worker who was not bound by the 3-year contract or the up-front payments plan |

--I was also denied internet banking at Citibank because I was a foreigner. They told me it was impossible. I now have internet banking at KEB, which is a great bank for foreigners.
--I've been denied credit cards, but now I understand you can get one at KEB...though I don't really think I need one now.
-I've been denied a cell phone plan and told that I can only get a card phone.
--My internet company refused to let me have my internet bills in my name. I had to get a Korean to register it under their name and I have to give the money to them every month.
A lot of the time you are denied these things because they just don't want to bother dealing with you. |

This.
9/10 times when people say "Oh, no we can't...." the proper response is "Oh yes you can. Now hop to it and stop wasting my time."
Works best when said in Korean, with just the right amount of adjosshi snarl and arrogance. |

I wasn't really "denied" but there's a restaurant/bar I used to go to in Daegu with my friends, and they made us pay for our drinks every round, instead of getting a bill at the end. They admitted that they only do that for foreigners, and Koreans are allowed to wait until leaving to pay. We can't be trusted! |
