Had a fight with my boss on friday. Let me say, this is the first time I had seen him act in this manner and for the first three months of working for him it has been smooth sailing. Anyway, here is the story.

he was already mad cause i had shown a movie in this previous class...so next class these girls i have, my most disliked class (none of them speak)....
so i started off by asking them simple questions like who is your brother, does he go to this school, stuff like that...
one girl wont answer, so I just said, do you need me to help you or do you just not want to participate?
still nothing
i tell her ill wait
her friend starts talking for her
then he comes in and goes, what are you doing?
and I said, I am trying to get them to speak
he says come to my office
hes asks why havent you started the lesson! I said, well, i was about to actually....i was just having them practice speaking a bit before hand...
hes like dont do that anymore and goes into a rant about parents....
so I am like, ok i wont do it, sorry...I dont have a problem with that, i will do whatever.
then he goes, dont say that! and I am like, what do you mean?
i am agreeing with you, what do you want me to f***ing do!

he loses it, kicks the desk, gets in my face like he is going to fight me, throws some files all over the office, throws the phone
tells me I am fired, I ask if I can get that in writing

then runs down the stairwell and that was it I sent him a text and he just replied "its over man"

My contract says he has to give thirty days in writing before I am fired. What should I do?

Thanks

This is my new stock answer. Git ye back to his office and do The Worm.

His attitude to the ones you are plying for answers may be...

In instances where someone posts their work problems it is always helpful if we, your concerned and attentive peers, know whether you are working for a public school or a hagwon. Since you spoke of your boss rather than a co-teacher, I am assuming you are at a hagwon. If that's the case, I suggest you start looking for another job immediately. Contracts are generally useless in a hagwon as directors often decide not to abide by it. Perhaps you'll be able to work out a deal with your boss where he gives you a letter of release and you leave the hagwon quietly as you transfer your visa to another school.

Just got a text from my boss telling me not to come in today and that if I wanted to talk, come in after the school day ends. He is obviously not going to follow the contract. What are my options at this point?

Go to school at the usual time, and explain calmly that you want to resolve the matter, one way or another.

Sir John,
Take a look at this (because it happened in Ulsan):
http://www.theteacherscorner.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5358

I was going to advise going to the local Labor Office, but now I'm not so sure. Can't hurt, I suppose, but don't get your hopes up.

In my opinion, it's highly unlikely this boss of yours will provide the vital letter of release, which would legally allow you to seek employment elsewhere. If he'll do that, then move on, and hopefully start a better job, with a better boss.

If he is determined to fire you when you meet with him, try again and again to get him to provide the needed letter of release. Without it, you'll be forced to leave Korea.

Good luck. I'm quite glad to be away from Korea once and for all.

Hey Theo, thanks for the link. This actually happened to me once before already, I didnt get a letter of release but I wasnt forced to leave other than for the VISA run. No big deal on that end. At this point, I just want to get the money I am owed and be does with it if he feels this strongly about it.

Sir John, I understand your feeling completely!

I'm curious to know more about the previous experience, if you don't mind. PM perhaps?

Again, best wishes on getting everything settled and closed as quickly and smoothly as possible (no easy feat based on your description of this guy's attutide and behavior thus far).

Keep us informed as how things played out in the end.

That's tough, dude. I just went through a similar thing. I'm living and teaching in Laos now. There are jobs here, though you won't find them advertised anywhere.

Correct if I am wrong, but isn't this your second run in with an Ulsan school this year? It appears you've had some bad luck. How many students did your school have? Were they loosing kids? Usually, these are indications that the school is going down, and the owner is feeling the pressure.

Perhaps you should try a different city.

Another quality hagwon experience.

Trash your apartment before you leave, it's under their name.
