I taught last year and I will be returning to Korea as a grad student at Korea University. For grad school, it would really be helpful to have my desktop computer and giant printer along with some books and other things. Is there a cheap way to ship a lot of stuff to and from Korea? I have heard of other places having a service where you buy a crate, fill it up, and they will ship it for you. Does anyone have any information on this? Thanks.

I am going back to Canada. I contacted all the local shipping companies. Their prices and services varied. However, for the most part, the smallest amount they would accept/or charge you for was 3 cubic meters. I was quoted between 1,000,000 ~ 1,300,000 KRW for 3 cubic meters.

Just a thought. I would bet that the local Koreans in your community have some kind of system worked out for this; or at least would know the best way to ship to Korea. I'm in Seattle, and they seem to have a Korean version of every kind of company here (even Korean banks?!) I've considered shipping stuff over, but haven't had to do it yet. Good luck,

Just curious-- what was the price for a whole container? Also, what part of Canada are you moving to?

I don't know how much the whole container was, but the price roughly went up 250,000 won per extra cubic meter. I had a quote of 7.5 cubic meters, and would cost between 2 mil~3 mil to ship it. I choose a company at 2.4 mil. They are delivering door to door from Seoul to Canada.

Find out how much it is just to mail stuff (by ship). I remember sending reports to Korea and spending a few hundred dollars to ship 70-100 kilos.

Be careful about quotes for shipping. I just shipped stuff from China and after getting quotes from several companies, I went with one that came, looked an my stuff and estimated it at 5 cbm. When it came time to pack, they wrapped every single item in several layers of paper (even plastic stuff!) and the final amount was 6.3 cbm. When I signed off on that, I got an invoice a few days later for 8.6 cmb (!) because everything was then put in two large wooden crates!! If I'd known they were going to do that, I would have shipped some of my furniture instead of paying for empty space.
