|
|
People digging up old threads has given me an idea. Let's make a time-capsule thread. Fill it with observations about life in Korea in July 2009. Avoid posting about things that are unlikely to change. I realize that just searching through old threads serves the same purpose, more or less, but I'm curious to see what people post. Perhaps someone will dig this up in 5 or 10 years (well, probably not).
My list is probably not very good, but it's a starting point:
Clothes
-Vans or Converse are popular
-skinny jeans
-those stupid shorts that say PINK on the butt
Music
-OMG Wondergirls are on TV in America (Wendy Williams Show), Korea is FAMOUS
Dave's ESL Drama
-Zanetsutken and Yu Bum Suk are banned!
Okay, that's it for now. Add your own. |

Lots of saber rattling from North Korea.
This probably won't be any different, but you never know... |

Wondergirls are becoming popular and famous in America.
Public schools have more applications than openings.
H1N1 and the economy keeps record numbers of Koreans home for the summer. Jeju sets record for visits.
Domino's Pizza outlets in Korea begin accepting online orders in English.
Koreans know who the King of Pop was. |

Today I saw:
1. A drunk Korean man stumbling down the street.
2. Another drunk Korean man pee in the road.
3. A taxi driver cut off another driver.
4. An ajumma wearing a sun visor.
I imagine that, in 5 years, we won't see such things again.... |

Advertisements for North American speakers only.
Kim Jong Il is alive.
What I shouldn't put here:
The KORUS FTA isn't ratified.
Koreans are unhappy with the president.
There was a brawl in the national assembly yesterday. |

The search function is still as worthless as pocket lint.
(On that note, how are future ESL'ers ever going to find this Time Capsule Thread???) |

Ten years ago, extra long pointy roach killer shoes were in style. I swear the girls looked like the wicked witch of the west walking around Seoul...
What will the shoe styles be like ten years from now? |

Bibitty boppitty boo ad for phones.
I heard several mothers repeating this to their children in one day, while out walking.
One poster was way ahead on this one.
In my elevator there was even some kind of Jive version. |

Yuck, those genie shoes were still being worn when I arrived over 7 years ago. Talk about a horrible style on the women! And the men looked like Bozo the clown in suits with those huge shoes they had. |
