Does anyone know where I can get some decent drama scripts for elementary students? I arrived here 3 weeks and I've got a PS summer camp coming up that last 2 weeks, while my co-teacher is on vacation aswell. She's made a table up and split classes into conversation, literature and drama and skit. I've prepared the conversation classes with relative ease and I hope they'll be interesting/fun, but I'm struggling with literature and drama (especially drama). The books provided for me aren't interesting at all and it's going to be difficult to keep their attention for 40 minutes each class.

Cheers

I've just done an elementary school camp with a drama section. I looked for suitable dramas but couldn't find any. They were either too difficult or contained content that wasn't exactly relevant to them. I decided to create my own drama with basic sentences and some of it was related to what they had covered in the curriculum. My co-teacher translated and typed the words under my sentences so the kids got a better understanding. I gave each kid a script and we practiced and practiced. Worked out quite well. I can email you the script if you want?

Hi nourozi, I've sent an e-mail to the one specified in your profile. I haven't got enough posts to PM yet.

Cheers!

If you can read Korean or there is a Korean around, ask them to search Naver. It will have tons of scripts written for Korean kids with usually horrible grammar that you'll need to fix. I am doing Snow White and The Wizard of Oz.

Easiest thing is to write your own, rather than scour the web looking for the most suitable script and then make all the changes to adapt it to your students. If you're desperate enough to pay for something, Shelley Vernon has a book of lowish-level skits at http://www.teachingenglishgames.com/eslplays.htm. She also has some good ideas in her games book.

If your co-teacher's lying on the beach while you're slaving away, I would consider that license to loosen the rules a bit. Pack some games and art projects in if you're having a hard time (and have a couple extra for backup). If she's really uptight about how it's supposed to go she is welcome to be there next time to help. Probably nothing will be said to you but you can always claim you didn't understand.

Oh, and movies are drama.

A really simple and relaxed way of introducing drama is through narration. Take a simple story, Jack and the Beanstalk for instance, and have several students read the story. Each student reads several lines. Other students play the parts and do the actions without speaking. It's very effective as a way into drama for kids. Here's a website with tons of stuff, including scripts and pdf's, for Jack and the Beanstalk: http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/try/resources/britlit/jack-beanstalk

I'd recommend the adaptation of The Little Mole that I wrote. Very easy for students and fun. Play the Video and learn the story, then practice the play and assign roles. Almost all Korean kids will know this popular book. Also, more plays in Resources on EFL Classroom 2.0. You might also make a play of Mr. X's Amazing Yesterday, found in videos.

Good luck,

David
