|
|
Here is my situation. IM currently in the USA, and will be taking a TESOL class in Thailand. About 5 weeks later, I will be flying to Korea for a job.
I was planning just buying a one way ticket to Thailand, then to Korea, and just buy a return ticket back to states, once my 1 year stay is over with in Korea.
A friend told me not to buy a one way ticket to a foreign country, because of customs, and a better price with round trip.
Whats the best options? |

Well aslong as you have an onward ticket out of the selective country then it doesn't really matter. |

If this is your first E-2 visa then you really need to be in the states to apply for your first visa...
If you have been to Korea before to work then carry on.. |

I believe the maximum term for a ticket is 10 months and not a year as it used to be. So unless you're planning on teaching within 10 months get a one way. |

This is mostly irrelevant for people able to get an E-2 visa. It is an "optional" rule designed to keep out the lesser peoples. |

i think you mean immigration not customs.....but i've never had an issue with any country's immigration with a one way ticket.
only issue is the airline staff checking you in, they may not let you on the plane without an onward ticket (i've been pulled up twice exiting australia on one way tickets. exiting thailand on a one way ticket is no problem, done it many times on several airlines)
as for price, somehow return flights are sometimes cheaper than one way tickets, but as the return date can only be set (i think) 311 days in the future from when you buy the ticket, you won't be able to use your return portion anyway (if you work for 12 months). |

How often do you travel kid?, you CAN get an onward ticket whether he is teaching for 1 year or not, depends on the airline, of course no US airline does this because they are a bunch of paranoid freaks. Ok don't argue about air travel with me boy. |

Do they still do open-ended tickets or do they make you pick a return date? Maybe it depends on airline. |

if you're trying to find work in korea, i'd suggest you get your visa work done in the states. certain schools will pay for your roundtrip airfaire (while others will reimburse you after a s 6month contract).
i dunno, i always felt more secure when the school paid for my ticket |

Hm, I just bought a one way ticket about a few days ago. My recruiter told me it could be any type of ticket as long as the arrival date was August 23rd. One way was about 200 dollars cheaper than a round trip and I figured I wouldn't need a RT at the moment.
I shouldn't have any problems, right? |

Of course, this information is completely wrong and based on the fact that the person who wrote it has no idea about the current regulations. |

I may be wrong here, so please correct me wise members) but I was under the impression that this rule depending on the visa you had.
If you already had the E2, you should be able to get just a 1-way, but if you are coming through the airport with a tourist visa, they will want to see a return ticket...perhaps one you could get refunded after getting the E2 issued.
Aside from that issue, my guess would be a round-trip ticket would likely be cheaper simply because over time taxes/gasoline prices/ etc will likely rise by the time you are ready to leave, possibly making that 1-way ticket home more expensive that it would be if you bought it in the package. Also given the tensions with NK, having an return ticket already paid for and easily accessible might not be a bad idea. |

So far the problem I've seen with getting a round-trip ticket is:
-not always cheaper, sometimes even more, depending on airline, dates, layovers
-all these online discount brokers (i.e. orbitz) make you pick a return date before my contract expires and who knows if/when I'll be returning before the end of my contract
-changing the return trip of a ticket is at least 100-150 for domestic tickets, not sure for international. |

Doesn't it vary according to one's contract? Some places will purchase your round trip while other will reimburse a one-way and then purchase your return ticket once you've finished your contract it seems. |
