I'm done my degree. I have no debt. I'm on my way to fun, adventure, learning, and life experience.
I've been following these forums, as well as the Asian forums for quite sometime. Korea seems to suck. Why are you all there? Poor? Paying your pathetic student loans? Love being lied to and cheated? Good God there must be better places.
Having said that, and being a submissive fan of self flagellation, I am considering Korea for a wild whim. It is at the very least clear that they will accept every loser available. Not to say I'm a loser. But it might be interesting to step down a few notches on the social ladder and meet a few.
My daddy will be proud I've rubbed shoulders with the great unwashed. It's just not the same on the factory floor you know. |

Don't be fooled by some of the overly vocal cry-babies on this and other forums. Like ANY other place in the world, Korea has its advantages and disadvantages. IMO the primary thing you want to watch out for are schools that will cheat you. Your best chance of avoiding these is to opt for a public (SMOE, GEPIK, or EPIK) school your first year in Korea. If you stay longer, then you can do your research on the hagwons (private academies).
Sure there's plenty to complain about in Korea (I'm certainly guilty of it on many occasions), but there's plenty to embrace. |

That's what I wanted to hear! I have a perennial positive attitude and I bet I can win over the grumps if and when I meet them. I need an emotional challenge. I have been blessed thus far and I know it. A few bumps in my road will do me good. Korea here I come! |

Most people sign up to do a year.
I'd estimate 30% drop out and don't finish it.
7 out 10 who finish one year, end up going home.
Of the maybe 20% who stay on for 2nd year, most do it for extra money or because they have established relationships here or because there is some factor at home that they are not ready to return to.
By the time you get to your 3rd, 4th, 5th years here, you start to redefine what your definition of home really is. For me, I would have to effectively leave home, to go home at this point.
It is not all bad. The longer you stay = the deeper you absorb yourself into Korean society and the more inside knowledge and connections you can make. |

I've talked to some friends who have older siblings who have been to Korea. Pretty much everyone knows someone, or knows someone who knows someone, who buggered off prior to completing a contract.
I've never quit anything halfway through, but I've never really ben dicked around all that much either. I wonder how I will handle the situation. I think I'm fairly tough, but maybe it's only book tough you know? Not street tough. Nonetheless, it will be interesting. |

Congratulations on finishing your degree. You have to look at it this way, though. Some people are fortunate, some are not. I personally have no university debt. However, I don't take stabs at people who do. Does doing so make you feel better about yourself? Virtuous?
I make mistakes. Normally I wouldn't italicize someone's poor grammar, but you certainly asked for someone to bring you down off your high horse. Or perhaps you were already at the ladder's bottom notch?
