A recruiter told me that I was sending my visa documents off for a public school in Ansan, but has since told me that the only one available is a hagwon in Uijeongbu. Little help? Obviously, I deserve some kind of kick in the ass for making absolutely sure it wasn't all legit, but is there anything I can do except say no to the hagwon and the return of my stuff? |

You can ask for the return of your 'stuff', but I doubt you'll get it. |

I feel victim to the old 'bait and switch' trick before.
Your recruiter should at least have the decency to hold your documents and forward them to another recruiter/school in Korea. That's what my recruiter did. So contact other schools/recruiters immediately and tell them your documents are being held in Korea. So you can look for jobs that start very soon. Don't feel pressured to take the Euijungbu job. There are other jobs available now.
Maybe i'm just being sceptical and your recruiter is honest and something fell through in a legitimate way. But i can't help but NOT trust recruiters and feel that you were screwed over like i was (i think i was). |

You're not supposed to send your stuff until AFTER you see the contract. |

I got the bait-and-switch after I'd signed the contract and sent all my stuff. It was an ordeal. But I've read some stories on here about recruiters sending all the stuff back. I guess it's just luck of the draw and whether or not your recruiter figures it's worth $50. |

I got an email from the recruiter telling me that the documents are being returned to me. She also gave a tracing number for it. Now, can anyone read the Korean on the post office website so that I can find out where the documents are, and how long I'll be waiting for them? |

Assuming she sent it via the Korean Post Office, give their English website a shot:

With a tracking number you should get them back in 5 business days or so. |

Since you were originally applying to a public school, what program did you applied to? Was it GEPIK? |

Yes, it was through GEPIK. Apparently. Also apparently, there's more GEPIK positions coming up in October, but I've been told this by a recruiter. Is there any truth in this? |

Is there truth to it? Possibly. I wouldn't say a plethora of positions open up, but I hear that there is turnover. Usually the cause of turnover for GEPIK and EPIK is that some teachers are placed out in essentially the boonies, and are unhappy with the situation. Keep in mind, this entails a long list of reasons of unhappiness: being the only foreigner, apartment, limited resources, etc.
I know that EPIK is definitely still accepting applications--someone I know is applying now. However, he hasn't been offered a position and I believe he is essentially waiting to take over someone's assignment should they leave. I'm not sure about GEPIK.
If you really want to teach public school in Seoul, I would suggest SMOE; applications are being accepted for March 2009. |
