I just realized when I got home, after my co-teacher took me to get my ARC (by the way would take two weeks to process ) card that I did not have my passport. I called my co-teacher right away and explained to her it was important that I have my passport at all times. She claimed that she saw other applicants forms with their passports. She claimed she woould call Monday. Is this normal Confused Confused Confused

Well, the good news is it's normal. The bad news, if it applies to you, is you might need the passport and ARC card for other stuff. Last year, I had an account with Shinhan bank with the bulk of my money. I went in to take some out and they asked for ID.

I have since then closed the account and will never use Shinhan again unless they issue ATM cards to foreigners.

Because they asked for ID to protect your money?

No, because they didn't give me an ATM card like KB and Nonghyup do. I don't know about Woori or other banks, but common sense would tell you that you should be given an ATM card. I am not talking about a credit card, but just a simple cash/debit card for grocery purchases and such.

In addition to this, they lied to me when I signed up with Shinhan. I was told I could use the bankbook. They also lied about promising to issue me an ATM card after a "probationary" period. Other banks haven't done this.

For a short time, YES.

After 3 weeks, tell your embassy you lost it. Get a new one and don't tell the school. Keep the new one and if the school gives it back later, cut it up.

They might not tell you when Immi gave it back, they might want to hold it. 3 weeks is long enough for Immi to give you a stamp.

This year, the processing time for my visa renewal at Busan Immigration was two weeks. The previous three years, the processing time was only one week. The OP's best bet is to go to Immigration exactly two weeks after application and pick up the passport and ARC in person.

It can also be mailed. The issue I think is more whether or not you can feel safe giving your passport than time. I suggest to wait a month then ask about it.

If things go as planned, I would expect 2-3 weeks wait time.

Yes, immigration needs your passport to process your ARC. The school was supposed to tell you to make a photocopy of your passport to carry around while you are waiting. While it is not a legal document that will allow you to travel out of the country, it is good enough if you are asked for identification by police, etc...

Why would you cut up a passport that has your visa in it?

Immi doesn't give a stamp, they give you the Alien Registration Card. Customs stamps you passport when your cross borders.

Immigration stamps your passport when you cross borders. Customs inspects your stuff when you cross borders. Also, you will need to get a visa affixed to your new passport.

They do put a small stamp in your passport showing that your Alien Registration Card has been issued.

It's completely normal for them to take your passport. I didn't like it the first time either, but I've done it three times now and I always get it back. Don't worry. It's usually your boss you have to worry about keeping your passport, not immigration.
