I'm trying to decide on whether I should I buy a laptop for portability or power. I'm in a fix in terms of trying to decide on a laptop and/or building a desktop in Korea.

If your laptop weighs like a cinder block, you won't be taking it anywhere.

Maybe you should consider buying a desktop computer, and a netbook. That way you have both power, and portability.

A desktop + netbook should be the same price as buying a power laptop.

+1

Definitely. Desktop and netbook. Perfect combination.

Mmm... Should I buy components here in America or buy them there? Or maybe buy a pre-built system over there?

They vary, but generally not bad.

If you want a performance PC, for gaming etc, then buy the parts in the States. Much cheaper for higher-end stuff than Korea.

If you just want a mid-level PC, then buy in Korea.

You could just buy all the 'western' parts like graphics card and processor in the states and get the 'eastern' parts in Yongsan if your moving to Seoul.

Although I'm a big fan of the macbook pro 13'' or 15'' which you can dual boot with Windows and use as both your desktop and laptop. Extremely well built and easy to carry around with really good battery life considering the power of the system. I'll be picking up mine later this year, or early next, as I'm still using a 2006 macbook 13''. I use an external monitor when at home to have the dual screen set up, which makes it nice for viewing movies or just having extra workspace. There is an educational deal, which maybe someone you know could help you out with, where you can save around 100 bucks or more and get a free rebate on a ipod touch.

I've become addicted to my new I-pod touch while on the go. It fits in your pocket... quite a bit smaller than a netbook. Of course, typing is slower, but I'm amazed at how functional and quick the interface is for zooming/working on such a small screen.

If you are just someone who likes to check e-mail, get news, read-up on posts here, or make some shorter posts, then consider the I-pod touch. You won't be doing any spreadsheets on it, though (at least, I haven't tried yet).

The games are far more interesting than I expected, as well.
