So I'm nearing the end of my contract and my hogwon, that has prevented me from using my 10 days of paid vacation, decided that instead of sticking it out until the end of the contract and paying me for my unused vacation, they will force me to use it and leave early. Along with this they are making me move out of my apartment before the end of the contract as well(though they are marginally compensating me for that, much to their chagrin).

The last day of my contract is 8/30, they are making my last day 8/25. So you'd think they'd at least pay me four days of vacation right???

of course not. They tell me i'm "using" my "vacation" on 8/29 & 8/30 (sat & sun)... I've never once worked on Saturday or Sunday, i've never once been asked to come in on Saturday or Sunday and it's not in my contract.... i just wanna know...is there anything i can do/say to fight this???

I'm not so much worried about the pay as i am the principles revolving around this situation...

Thanks!

You should be worried about your pay, because there's a good chance you won't get severance without a fight.

Did you by any chance work for Mrs. Ann (English First Name: Gloria) (Owner/Director) at OE DAE Language Institute (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies) in Suwon? A self proclaimed religious but total hypocrite of a woman with her own church? That's what she does. Nor does she pay airfare.....a total thief....all the while going around preaching her bible. If that's the case, or in fact whoever you are with, get what you can from them and when that is secure go back to get the rest. If they refuse start smashing things, get nasty, whatever. Make them tatoally lose face and let the students' aprents kow what an undesirable thief they are.

ricetoast, sorry to hear about your dilemma, and I definitely sympathize with you.

SharkDiver, your post is hilarious; true I know, but hilarious. The things that were done to me in the name of Christianity were not only awful, but borderline evil (not my employer, but in a Christian-sponsored and operated "hospital' that left me permanently disabled -- a nightmare experience forever burned into my psyche, and body)

marlow, I think what you offer is also likely.

Reading this thread reminds me of all the crap I went through and/or witnessed happening to others.

I am SO GLAD to be out of Korea!

That's just simple Korean employee/employer relations. There's no reason for them to follow labor laws and treat people with respect. Sure, why not let you go early and tell you that the last few days of your contract are the vacation they couldn't let you take? After all, they have a new teacher coming in. And why not count Saturday and Sunday as part of your vacation? Hey, while we're at it, let's kick the teacher out of his/her apartment and give them 50 bucks or something. Yeah.

Wonders never cease.

Sometimes there are contract clauses that require the employee or employer to give some notice on vacation. But they ignore that when it doesn't benefit them. Usually if you haven't taken your vacation by the end of the contract, they just ignore that. They couldn't let you take it, but can't believe you'd ask to be compensated for not taking it. They might bring something negative up about you that has nothing to do with vacation. Or just flat out refuse.

Anyway, get all your money (severance, final pay, etc.) before you leave and just forget about them.

If you think they're shafting you now, you won't like it to find out that you are entitled to 15 days by law, not 10.
