I posted this before but nobody had a real experienced reply (plus I only got one).

all the contracts I see say 20-30hrs per week, then say "Mon-Fri 2-9pm" or 9-5 etc...

last time I checked 7-8hrs/day*5days a week=40 hours a week...

am I missing something here? are there days off? or is it not 2-7...or is there some kind of lunch break/siesta I'm not aware of? (I know there's no siesta just a joke)

Thanks

Sound's like a hagwon. 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week = 40 hrs. Your teaching hours will be around 30. Your lunch breaks should be included in this

Your only days off are on Holidays, Sick days, a Vacation if you get it and weekends.

yes I've had a many 9-5 jobs, I was just confused as its never specified what the "teaching hours" are.

The discrepancy between 30hrs/week and 9-5 m-f is what confused me, even with 30min of lunch break a day thats 2.5hrs..40-2.5=37.5, not 30.

are the other hours for grading lesson planning etc?

I've never taught professionally before so forgive me if the questions seem inane or stupid.

There is probably mandatory "prep time" included in the schedule. Most places will have an hour to 30 minutes of prep time on your schedule, daily. Also, if you have 5 or 10 minute breaks between your classes, that time is not included in your "teaching time." That is a clever little trick that bosses try to play when screwing you out of your overtime, if you have any.

The 20-30 hours a week is the hours you will TEACH.

You are however expected to be on-site (at the school) for the full stretch of OPERATING hours. So even if you teach only 3-4 classes a day you will still have to be there from 2-9 or 9-5.

Teaching hours means the hours in the classroom. If you work from 8 am to 10 am, you are there 2 hours, but the classes are only 40 or 50 minutes, so your teaching hours are only about 1.5. I had an hour lunch before, but sometimes there's a break from 30 minutes to 4 hours (the dreaded split shift). The extra times are for grading papers, meetings, blah blah, you know, the red tape stuff that you just gotta do.

Thirty hours of classes, hours 2-10 pm, just means that the 30 hours
will be scheduled between 2 and 10. They may or may not expect you to stay at school if nothing is scheduled.
