|
|
Hey guys, does anyone know how much a gaming PC would cost here (only base unit)
Specs somewhere around;
CPU: dual, quad, i7 whatever
RAM: Atleast 4gb
GFX: High end nVidia , 260, 275, 285 or something
Also, are there any other good places to buy a machine besides Yongsan?
Thanks in advance guys. |

I tried my best to find a good deal on a gaming PC here in Korea. I really did. Maybe because I'm in a rural area or I didn't look at the right websites but at the end of it all better deals were to be had with Dell U.S.
Even the Dell Korea website didn't have the higher end graphics cards that were offered on the Dell U.S. site.
I ended up ordering a Dell 16" Studio XPS with 4 GB of DDR3 ram and the Mobility HD 4670 graphics card. Not the BEST gaming card but it scores avg for Crysys on high settings. (23 FPS)
http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-3870.9597.0.html
The cost of the laptop with the premium display was $1400 tax included. Dell has a huge discount on their XPS systems right now.
So, how to get it to Korea.
The advice given to me by another poster here at Dave's was to have the laptop shipped to my sister. I'll have her take it out of the box, setup Vista the first time, throw away some of the extra papers and discs (keeping the system and drivers disc.)
She will then ship it to me via Fed Ex marking it up as my personal computer that is 'used.' She will give the contact number for my school on the shipping papers and they will confirm my employment with customs. Then my laptop should be released and find its way to me.
A lot of hassle but I still think I'll end up with more laptop for the dollar. |

Thanks for the websites, do you know if it's generally cheaper to buy from these websites or to go Yongsan? |

Gaming laptop = weak desktop.
Laptop ≠ PC.
For $1400, you could have a decent rig. But, as it stands....
25 Average FPS. 25 Minimum FPS. 25 Maximum FPS.

gmarket is easy to get on to if you have an ARC, and is usually within a couple of percent of the danawa best price for hardware. You can pay for stuff with ATM transfers.

Dude not being funny but $1400 for a 'decent' rig? I might aswell wait until I'm back in London and get it from Ebay. For that amount of money you can buy a machine which plays 80% games at high settings at a decent FPS rate
And what is your 25fps based on? -.- |

You want an i7 gaming rig???
Demophobe is right. $1400.
The CPU and mobo alone will be 600,000.
ATI HD 4890? 300,000
6GB of quality Ram....200,000
HDD's plus case plus whatever, $300
That's the price of cutting edge. |

Yes, decent, like you said. 80%, not 100. High settings, not max. Decent FPS, not excellent. That is a "decent" rig, no more.
The 25 FPS is from the notebook review link above, where they interestingly use Crysis in a pure CPU test to discuss a graphics card. Nice. I bet it looks wonderful too.
Anyhow, 1024x768 res is quite 2002.
Now...think about it.
22" monitor? Decent. 24" +? Sweet.
Core2Quad? Decent. i7? Sweet.
Single GPU or single graphics card? Decent. Single/Dual SLI/Crossfire or multi GPU card? Sweet.
We are probably already near your budget, and we haven't looked at memory, mainboards, hard drives (SSD), peripherals, case, power, etc. Heck, if you want to go top shelf, I could almost blow your entire budget on the CPU alone!
Perhaps the problem is the difference between what a geek and a normal person would call 'decent'. |

lol Demophobe, I appreciate the info.
It seems Korea doesn't really believe in high end graphic cards, they seem kinda rare.
I think I'll wait until i get back home unless I find someone selling a power rig for second hand, I think maybe that's my best option...But I'll keep looking. |

This i7 rig I linked to is under that... you could upgrade/swap out the 250 graphics for something better, add a bit more Ram, and still be quite short of $1,400 (which is going to be about 1,700,000 won, right?). You could probably ask them to get a better card for you at the store (not online).
Of course, Demophobe being who he is, he'll probably complain and say he had some extremely expensive ram option in mind and tell me I'm stupid.

Two 8800's aren't all that. The 8800 is a 2007 card. What's Dell doing putting two year old cards in new machines? One HD4870 would probably be better.
OP. Korea is a terrible place to build any kind of high-end machine. I recently researched the prices of the HD4870x2 on the Korean internet. I found two websites selling it. One for 800,000 and the other for 1,100,000.
This is a card that goes for $370 on newegg.com. So we're talking about twice or even 3 times the price in Korea.
Little or no choice. High prices. That's the high-end computer market in Korea. |

Yep... high-end computer cards are best purchased overseas. Korea sucks. |

From what I can make out, that PC is using the new i5. Not i7. The i5 is good.....but not as good as i7.
Anyway. The expense with i7 is in the mobo and the DDR3 RAM. And, in Korea, the graphics card which is up to the job. |
