I just found out that I have two days off next week and I'd like to check out some places with beaches on the east coast.

Could anyone suggest some place they've been to that might be nice to pass through for a day or two?

Really, all the beaches are the same on the East Sea in terms of natural look. It's the cities or attractions around them that differ.

Historically popular spots are Gangneung, Yangyang, and Sokcho. Sokcho is also near Seoraksan National Park and that can in itself is a destination.

gangneung has a pretty nice beach. if you're taking your own car driving up the coast to sokcho and stopping at small beach towns is really interesting.

I am assuming that if you're a newbie you don't have a car! That makes some of the more out-of-the-way beaches a problem if you have two days. Unless you've been there already, I would just take the KTX to Busan and take your pick. Haeundae is trendy and touristy and has bikini girls and western restaurants, and has a direct subway link from the KTX station. Dadaepo is more natural and laid-back and is better for swimming. Both have lots of cheapie love hotels nearby.

I recommend Jeongdongjin (정동진) Beach outside of Gangneung - best way to get there is to take the bus into Gng and then take the train (gorgeous ocean views) for the 15 minute trip to the beach.

Easily one of the most beautiful places in Korea, in my opinion.
