This is not really for people that have stayed in Korea (or Asia) and just kept resigning contracts (like myself), unless you have some special insight.
I'm more interested in people that have taught for a year or so, then went home for a moderate length of time, then came back again. My question is, why? Is the job market at home drying up? Do you find it hard to live as comfortable as we do here? Is it a marriage or family thing? Do you just miss Korea? What's your reason?
I ask because I'm planning to leave (hopefully for good) in the coming months, but am obviously concerned about finding work in another English country. If I have to teach English again, I would hope to find opportunity elsewhere (say Japan or Taiwan), but I have to assume there must some good reason why we see so money people returning to the dae han min gook.

I am coming back for several reasons.
For one thing, the whole job situation. Getting even a mediocre job in the states is tough right now. Some people in Korea are too spoiled and have too much of a sense of entitlement to realize it, but the job deal we are given in Korea is pretty good. It is nice to have financial stability.
For another thing, the US is a boring place in many ways, and I am always looking for a way to get out of here. I could go on and on about the bad things in US culture, we all know what these things are. And I like to escape from them sometimes.
Also, Korea is pretty cool. Living in Korea has some pretty big downsides and it can drive a person crazy. But there are also some very sweet aspects to living in Korea. When I got back to the states from Korea, I missed Korea in many ways. And I knew in the back of my mind that I had unfinished business there.
In Korea, I feel like I am doing something interesting and exciting every day just because i'm in such a strange place. In the US, it's really easy to get lulled into a state of pure mental laziness.
Korea has the women, the partying and nightlife, travel around Asia, and the easy money. The US has the drugs, the expanses of nature and the cleanliness. Take your pick. |
