I've been teaching too many phonics classes and I find myself forgetting how to spell non-phonetic words. I also am confusing different phonic principles and butchering the spelling of simple words because of these phonics classes.

Anyone else getting dumber because they teach kids?

Yeah, I'm more of a grammar victim. I find myself writing wrong/awkward prepositions a lot.

As for spelling, I've always had my weird hangups, like when to double a consonant (thank god I have spell check or I'd have misspelled traveling many times) and I wonder how many times I've misspelled Lincoln in my lifetime.

Back in the day, an elementary school teacher of mine said to our class, "the older I get the harder it is to spell correctly".

I've found, over time, that he was absolutely right. It seems to get a little worse every year, and I just turned 30 so I'm terrified of what's to come in the next 30 years.

I was doing phonics for the first time this past month and it would really mess with my head, to do a certain phoneme repeated over and over. They words started to look absolutely crazy to me.

My grammar has gone a bit weird since I started spending most of my time conversing with non-native speakers, but the worst is coming out of my 2 and 1/2 hour Korean class that's all in Korean. It feels really bizarre to speak English for a couple of hours afterward, and I find myself doubting my grammar and structure, just as I was in Korean class the hour before.

protip: read more.

seriously. read books, magazine articles, you know---smart stuff. not this dave's crap. It should more than nullify any backsliding on spelling/grammar.

What I have a hard time getting over is having stupid Konglish phrases slip into my conversation, most notably "take a rest." Damn me. Someone provide a protip, please.

But it's mainly because we're not saying any long/harder/complicated sentences anymore. It's all the phrases or words the kids need to know. If we say anything longer than a few words, our coworkers have no idea what we say either. I'm still reading just as much, but because I never have to write or say it, it's all getting lost Mad

when i was living in japan (as an exchange student, so at a japanese school, with japanese families, and no english speakers around, really) my english deteriorated to such a level that it was apparently unintelligible in emails and such (sent to my family). haha. also ended up speaking english that was ... not really english. all this to say.. reading does help. i didn't do any of it, but during time in china, i did, and my english survived. kinda.

what's wrong with "take a rest"? like "why don't you take a rest?" is something i say all the time

Yeah, my English is getting worse. I try and write a blog to keep my writing sharp, but as for speaking... I spend all day around Korean people and all night around Americans. I'll have to take English classes when I get back home.
