I'm in the US right now, I just got my paperwork together and i'm about to start contacting recruiters and applying for jobs in Korea.

I need to see a dentist. One of my teeth feels all messed up, I think the filling fell out.

I have no insurance and no money, and i'm sure this will be very expensive to be taken care of here in the US, so I am thinking that maybe I should hold off until I get to Korea.

What do you all think? How is the overall quality of dentistry in Korea? I know that the costs are much, much lower. If you were in my siuation, would you wait and get it done in Korea, or would you just do it at home before leaving?

What should I do? My third choice is to go down into Mexico and do it there, which is not exactly the ideal scenario.

If it were me I would wait till I was back in Korea, especially if you don't have money right now. When you get back there ask people for recommendations for English speaking dentists. I've spoken with one person who has had good dentist experiences over there, and while it's only one person, I doubt that the overall quality of dentists can be that bad there.

I was in the same position. I opted to have it done in the US, which was expensive. However, if I waited until I returned to Korea I may have needed root canal by then, rather than just a new filling. That's something you may want to think about. You can find good dentists in Korea, just go to one who is recommended. I knew people who had dental work done in Seoul, which turned out fine. Someone else had work done in the country and it was a disaster. If you really want to wait, I'm sure you can find a good dentist. [/u]

Thailand, Venezuela... a wide variety of places.

I had dental care in Venezuela done for a fifth of the US cost. Or less.
the dentist spoke good English. Went to school in the US.

you'd be INSANE to pay out of pocket in the US for anything. a sure sign of a single digit IQ.

I'm never paying for anything health related in the US ever again.

I'd go to Mexico if it's convenient. Exchange rate right now is good for you.

Dunno much about Korea, but from what I've read, unlike medical care, dental care costs here seem "American" Shocked

You'll definitely be able to afford it in Korea, if you can hold out that long. You may be able to go a month or two before it really starts to give you trouble--abscess, toothache, etc.

The problem with U.S. dentists is that they'll want to do x-rays, charge you for an exam, set you up as a patient (unless you have a family dentist that you've seen in the past year or so), and charge you $100 BEFORE they even start to work. Then the next appt. to actually fix the tooth will cost you that much again. Evil or Very Mad

So what happened to the filling? Have you passed it yet? Shocked Wink

This is pretty much what I was thinking. It's either Mexico or Korea for me I guess.

Thanks for the advice people.

You're right on all that. The US dental industry really needs to get it's act together and realize that we are not all rich.

The filling? I don't know what happened to it. I didn't dig through my own feces looking for it or anything. Confused

A crown in India at a good dentist was 40$. Filling 20$ and I had my teeth cleaned for 14$. Korea has some cheap dentists and some expensive ones. Two countries i would stay away from dentists ar ethe U.S. and Australia as they are freakin expensive.

Thanks a lot for the tips.

Anyone had any experiences with Mexican dentists? I'm pretty close to Mex, so I might just go down there. Seems to be my most reasonable option really. Hopefully I wont get kidnapped and tortured by a drug/kidnapping cartel.

Yeah, that's pretty much what everyone is saying these days.

It's too bad that it's gotten so bad there. 7 or 8 years ago I used to go down there occasionally and it was great. But now it's become an incredibly evil place, dead bodies on the side of the road every day, etc.

I would go to TJ for a quick in and out trip to the dentist though, in the middle of the daytime. That would be reasonably safe.

the ones in TJ will charge you a bunch more than you'd pay in the interior.

but if that's the most convenient place, go.

you'll be fine, safety wise.

and you'll still save a significant amount of money.

Wait to see dentist in Korea. For anything else, use american doctors. Korean doctors are very incompetent. Been to hospital several times, and after cit-scans, x-rays , endoscopes, they really have no idea what causes my stomach pains. I had better service in the Philippines and they gave me diagnosis quickly.
