Hi guys

This might be a silly question, but I am just wondering.

About a week ago we were informed that the English Village in Ansan is closing down and that our last day of employment would be 30 Sep. We have 30 days after that to leave the country.

My question is... if I leave the country and my E2 visa is cancelled, will I be able to keep my bank account and my credit card active.

I am planning to return to Korea 2 weeks later.

I've never been fired from a Korean job, but I've changed jobs many times and left the country and returned twice. None of my accounts were ever frozen.

ETA: OP, I don't know what will happen to your credit card. I've only had a credit card for a year and a half or so, and I haven't left the country for any length of time since I've had it.

Not true. I've left my bank account with no activity for over a year.

I think your credit card will stay active if it is good for one year.

Was your bank account opened with your ARC? I had one account like that during a period when I was between jobs with no ARC. I lost my ATM card and when I went to get it replaced, I found that they would not replace it since I could not show my ARC as identification. I had copies of the ARC (you should make some copies), but that wasn't good enough in this case. Luckily I did have a Korean drivers license, which has the ARC number on it. And the drivers license is good for 5 years.

So, you may not be able to get any service from the bank tellers without your ARC. Maybe get a Korean Driver's license in the time you have left.

Rule #1 for living and working abroad, always open a bank account using your passport and not your visa papers.

Clue: one always belongs to you, the other can be taken away from you.

Or you can have two. One with your ARC, for your daily life, and your "savings" account with your passport with majority of your money it it. The one with your ARC for you daily living, you don't have to worry about getting somewhere and not having your passport with you to access your account. The passport one... it keeps your hand out of the cookie jar, and if worst comes to worst, you can get access to it without your ARC. Some of us (*raises hand slowly*) have problems saving aw much money as your could if it's all in one account anyway. LOL Of course, if you're only going to be here for a year, you really don't need a savings account like that. That's mainly for the people waiting for better exchange rates.

Maybe you could call another branch and ask the same question. Sometimes they make it up as they go. I don't think it's a branch by branch policy, freezing/closing accounts is a big deal. So I'm sure each bank will have the same policy, but that doesn't necessarily mean the person who answered the phone knows the answer.

I would personally get to the bank and start transferring money home.

Good luck with your situation.

Hi guys

Thanx for all your replies.... but I am coming back to Korea after 2 weeks. I do not want my bank account to be closed or transfer any money home. I will contact my bank manager today and report back what he says.

How would they even know if you didn't walk in and tell them?

I'm curious...

Is this the English Village run by the Korean Herald? Do you know if the Pungnap English Village in Seoul is still going?
