If you are placed in Gangnam district, specifically in Seocho-gu, could you please PM me? I want to find out who my replacement is and fill you in on some stuff.

the orientation isn't until next month...but I'm intrigued as I am going to be there, and have as much chance of being placed there as anyone else!
However, details! |

Go ahead and post your info. Most of us won't know where we're going to be until after orientation, and it could be nice for the people who are sent there to know ahead of time! |

you should check out the facebook groups fro SMOE. Most of us are over there where it's more private. |

Not 100% true... Had a friend re-post a conversation on facebook (that his friend had originally posted) between his friend and Jon Pak concerning health insurance and what it covers... Nothing demening was said, it was simply a repost of an email conversation for the purpose of spreading information...
Somehow (he suspects one of his FB friends is friends with JP) Jon found out and went nuts... My friend got yanked out of work one afternoon with a phone call telling him to get himself down to SMOE head office immediately, where JP proceeded to chew him a new one for an hour in his office... |

So employees aren't allowed to discuss benefits with SMOE?
These guys are getting a worse reputation than many hagwons I know.

So I talked to Jon and he said Sat. Aug 29th is the day that head teachers/co-teachers will be picking up their new NSETs.
I asked the head teacher at my school if I could come with him, and he said yes. So, I will be picking up my school's new NSET! I think it's good because I wish someone had done that for me...I had so many questions that my head teacher couldn't answer, and it would have been nice to have the other foreign teacher, or the teacher I was going to replace, to have someone straighten some things out for me.
I sort of think this is something SMOE should adopt, because it would be beneficial for many people, the school and new NSET especially. But, the problem is that the date for picking up the NSET is past the 24th, meaning teachers that are most likely NOT going to stick around and do this, especially if they are not getting paid. |

Good idea OP... Would have loved that myself, especially because the co-teacher and VP who came to pick me up spoke little English and had less information to answer my questions than they did vocab to answer them
On a side note, and I know it's never ever going to happen, but I would love to see a couple of "NSET Liason" positions created for experienced SMOE teachers at SMOE HQ... English speaking teachers who have been here a couple of years, know what's going on, and know how/what/why things are going on... People who have been through the teaching system here and can answer questions (or find out information from SMOE) without all of the current red-tape, multitude of misinformed people, and hassle of the current system...
Basically what JP is supposed to be doing, but as so often people point out, generally fails at completly...
(Example: SMOE HQ, District Offices, and Co-Teachers have told serveral people, myself included, at various times in the last month a number of different requirements for re-contracting and getting your visa renewed... Would love to have just had one person I could ask - without the usual disregard and aloofness from SMOE HQ that most of us have come to know and love - instead of running around trying to piece together the information I need...)
Sorry for the hijack, got myself a bit off topic, LOL |

I think that's what the District NSET's jobs are for, but I am not sure. I love doing teacher training and organizing stuff, so I think I would have been a good candidate for the job you are talking about. It's too bad they don't hire more foreigners for positions like that. I don't think you would need to speak too much Korean, either. |

At least in my district, the D-NSET job is a joke... No pay for whatever extra crap work they decide to throw at you... Hell, my rep STILL doesn't have a full email list of all the of NSETs in our area, nor does she contact the ones that she has on any sort of regular basis (I havn't heard from her in about 6 months, lol)... |

JP himself is on Facebook and those groups can be viewed by anyone. You see him posting on the group walls/discussion boards. |
