I will be leaving for Korea in two weeks. I will be working at a Christian school. I've read that alcohol is a popular choice for gifts, but would this be a wise choice for a Christian school?

I was thinking something along the lines of where I am from (Minnesota). Any advice?

Don't give gifts at arrival. Gifts are for days such as New Year's and Chuseuk. Also, gift-->bribery is a sensitive issue in a land where waitresses won't even accept tips.

i think it's perfectly acceptable to bring a small gift; i've certainly done it, and most teachers at my school do it.

but pick something local to your hometown / state / province. if you're avoiding alcohol, perhaps a local tea or coffee product?

A good gift for you to bring to Korea is the heart of God and true experience of His love in your life. Let that light be the gift in which you bring here. Truly, that would be a wonderful present, especially in a country that exalts Rick Warren and Joel Osteen as men of God.

Besides that something useful and either rare in Korea or something that is much too expensive, like honey or maple syrup. Being from Canada, Koreans have enjoyed those items. You'll have to send liquids and the like by mail due to flight regulations.

I would be interested to hear of your adventures in a Christian school and your Walk as you land here. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

And above all have trust. Don't worry about things like contracts that are written by men. Have trust in the Word of God. You will be working for your brothers in Christ so you need not worry about petty, earthly things like that.

Why not bring a few pocket-size Bibles written in English. There are probably some very nice copies at the stores in close to you. I just thought it might be unique because of your school.

Gifts for Christians? How about providing them with the gift of 'knowledge'. Point out to them that Xity is a first century doomsday cult, and that it is incredible that 'educators' in the 21st century still buy into it. Find a book in the science section of your local bookstore on the origins of life on earth and give it to them.

Again, it's absolutely astonishing that anyone still believes that nonsense. Why would you even apply to work at a Xian school? Spending 40 hours a week surrounded by religious ignoramuses. I shiver at the thought.

Great idea... there is definitely a shortage of English Bibles. If you find any, they are either overpriced (financially speaking) or the fury of NIVs would make any Bible believer sick.

Not to mention that they are wonderful gifts for those foreigners that you will meet that do not know Christ (Koreans too), or at least they think they are saved from Hell because they were told they were or because they belong to a particular group, whom claim partial truth.

Just make sure you know Who wrote it before you claim to believe in it!

Christians in Korea tend not to be the fundamentalist type that have given US Christians such a bad image.

I work with Korean Christians and they believe in evolution and are accepting of gays. The are actually quite nice people.

p.s. I am not a Christian myself.

Don't worry, the school will have many clever means of deducting a gift from your salary.
