[help] "seou1ite" sold me a bad disk

Hello Everybody,

Firstly, I want to apprise you NOT to buy anything from "seou1ite"

He has sold me a 4 years old broken disk, by telling me that it was 1 year old and working great.

Second, does any one know how to claim the 5 year disk warranty from seagate company in Korea?

An urgent reply will be MOST appreciated..

usually i would just stay out of other people's transactions and would rather just say "buyer beware", but i am bored and so i looked at sou1ite's previous posts. it seems that s/he has been doing a lot of hard drive swapping recently (over the period of a short week).

anywho, the buyer should always take the proper precautions when buying any goods from private sellers (new or used). i believe that you could have requested the WD serial numbers from seou1ite and found out the proper warranty expiration date at WD's website.

also, i'm curious if you had the HD shipped, because you live in Daejeon right? it's possible it was just damaged during postal delivery. or, was it working for a while and then just suddenly failed while at your residence? how did you find out it was four years old? if you checked it out by the serial numbers, then i would ask you to review paragraph two.

i don't think you have shown enough evidence to make people not buy from seou1ite. however, because of these sudden flippings/swappings of HDs from seou1ite in the last week or two, i would probably take extra care if i ever decided to purchase from him/her.

It is possible it was damaged while being transported. I had one from Japan. It worked fine after I went back to the states and came to Korea. Then, I moved to Seoul, a third move and it still worked. I moved to Pyeongtaek, plugged it in and finally learned my lesson. Don't store all your stuff on just one hard drive.

The first thing is: He said he is selling a year old disk. I checked the date code on the seagate disk and confirmed it that it was NOT 1 year old, rather 4 years old.

Secondly, if it were damaged during shipping (very rarely does that happen!), I would still have managed a warranty had he sold me a year old disk.

Thirdly, he doesnot pick up his phone AND he doesnot tell me from where he bought it. The seagate service center here told me that he bought it from OUTSIDE Korea, so they cant service this particular disk.

but i still want to know why you didn't check the date code before you bought it? either by having the seller tell you the numbers or just furnish you with a picture of the numbers.

i would also say that shipping damages to hard drives don't just rarely happen; i believe it depends on the packaging and/or the delivery service. i have had only one experience with korean postal and something small did actually break. i'm not saying i don't trust their services. i honestly wouldn't know. i'll leave it to others to discuss that.

thirdly, why don't you just email Seagate? you can make an online account and submit a case with your serial number. if you don't want to make an online account and just find out where your hard drive was originally purchased, then try chatting with a support representative. you don't need an account with Seagate to do this. I'm sure it's best just to choose your home country, and not Korea. Who knows if you'd get a Korean speaking rep.

the representative could surely help you figure out what steps to take next. i am not sure on their policy either, but it might be in your best interest to tell them that the drive was a gift (not second hand). i'm not sure if their warranty is transferable.

Well, to start with, a friend of mine hand-picked the drive and delivered it to me. So there is not postal service involved and hence no rough handling.

Secondly, I talked to seagate, and they said that this disk is not under warranty because it came out of some company case/computer, which makes its warranty invalid, i.e. if its taken out of the case. (He didnot even mention it, let alone telling me that it was a 4 years old disk)

Thirdly, I was expecting him to be true to his word, and that the link he sent was to a product 1 year old..so I calculated it to be an honest deal!

I dont know how others here can blame you for buyer beware because the seller OBVIOUSLY lied to you...

Actually we don't know if it was a true lie, maybe he was ignorant and only had the rig for 1 year and sold it to you thinking the hard drive was such, but either way it was incorrect information on the sellers part.

Anyways, it's not your fault at all.
There are levels of Buyer Bewareness.

For example, if I buy a product I can't be expected to possibly do everything to ensure it's ok. The seller has some responsibility to make sure it is working and intact as well have responsibility if the product is malfunctioning, to replace it with a new one.

If I advertise online to sell a brand new IPOD still in box. And then I ship someone a used 2 year used ipod, it's obvious the seller is deceiving and it is obviously his fault. You could always, of course, ask for the IPN number and reference it on a apple site to make sure it's new, but thats kind of ridiculous.

Should i go to great lengths to make sure the product I'm buying is the product I'm buying?

What about all the people on these forums are deceived on purpose. We can't claim buyer beware. If a seller starts lying or providing incorrect information its quite obviously the sellers fault.

I think this is pretty open and shut

I appreciate the solace. I just hope this guy at least has the moral decency to tell me the place from where he bought it so that I can get a claim myself.

I just hope he has the honesty.... Confused
