According to http://www.teflengland.co.uk i can get a job in Korea with their 70 hour course. In everyones experience is this correct, or is the course a waste of money?

cheers
James

You can get a job in Korea with no TEFL at all, just a BA. If you get a TEFL though, I think it needs to be 100 hours and above to get more pay from your employer, otherwise they're not interested.

Maybe someone else could clarify this? I'm no expert so don't be put off by me saying that, have a look around, ask other people etc.

I did 120 hour TEFL in Europe a few years back and found it to be worth every penny just for the experience, but if money's supertight then maybe come without one.

Good luck in deciding.

If you're interested in teaching as a career, or being able to travel to other Countries to teach then I'd advise getting a 'proper 100+ TEFL'. That's certainly what I plan to do. I've noticed that on a few application forms for jobs in several different Countries that they specifically want to know if your TEFL qualification is 100+ hours. It would potentially give you more job opportunities if you got the 'full course'.

Also, what exactly is the price saving between a 70 and 100hour course? Surely it can't be THAT much?

The course I am looking at is 20 weekend course and then 50 hours online. You can also do 30 hours online grammar which would make 100 hours. Is a mix of online and classroom OK? Basically I cannot afford to do a full time 4 week CELTA or TEFL or have the time to do it either.

This looks a lot like the i-to-i website, in fact the wording is exactly the same. By all means do the 100 hour course if you think it will help, but don't expect them to place you in a good school afterwards.

They also claim to be able to place people in Japan, which raises my eyebrows given the current job market over there. In my opinion, you would complete the 100 hour course but then they would be like "actually Japan has no more placements available, but how about Vietnam?"

That Virtual TESOL (see top banner on this forum) looks interesting.
I wonder if it's based on the Habbo Hotel format ;-p

If you are asking TEFL certificate only AND no degree will get you a job in Korea, then no.

I've heard people say that online courses with online only aren't worth much. I don't know anything about a combo class/online course. Perhaps get in touch with a school/recruiter and they would have the info?

The three day course seems to cover what the 100-hour in-class is intended for i.e. some employers want actual practice teaching done as part of the course. Three-day is 30 hours. Add the 50 hour on-line and the 30 hour grammar thingy to make up the 100-hours. Even if that don't get you the extra dosh, you'll still get a good grounding in ESL teaching. Will that give an edge in Korean job market? Not really, every other applicant has one. What you need is a willingness to dig in on a sticky wicket.
