I hear everyday that English teachers in Korea could not get jobs or
ladies back home thats why we are here.

This was not true of me. I had a job and was married when I came here.
I came here because I wanted to try teaching, I like adventure, and I
wanted to save money.

I left the life in a cubical to come work in Korea. I had a ok job in the
states, with benefits, working for a medium size company.

I wanted to come to a small city in Korea because I was not interested in
Korean women and the pay was better in smaller cities.

I have been here three years which was the plan. We have saved some
money but are worried about starting over in Canada or America.

So why did you come to Korea?

I came here to work public school.

The poorest American kid can speak English. In today's world that alone means a world of difference from a poor Korean kid that can't.

My principles dictate what jobs are open to me. But after that financial pragmatism takes over. So That's why I chose Korea over other countries.

Though sometimes I wish. That if finances weren't such a huge issue for me. I could have done what I always dreamed about doing. Before coming to Korea. I.... had to my great regret. Turned down my dream job, working with a Human Rights Group in Sierra Leone because they couldn't afford to pay me.

I care about really contributing to the world. But, well... even if money isn't your goal in life. You still need to care about it. Isn't life grand? lol

But that's just me. I'm sure most the people on this board don't agree with my sentiments.

I'm going for similar reasons. I could probably get a job here, at least once the economy starts recovering. However, the cost of living in Canada is ridiculous; that has me thinking of possibly staying in Korea long term if I like it enough.

I was a fresh college grad who actually obtained a job in my field (journalism), had a brand new apartment, brand new car, new furniture, great social life...but a desire to travel. Gas money was killing me going to/from work so I began looking for a replacement. Haphazardly applied for a SK job, got a call 1 week later and said "see you in a month" about 2 weeks after that. It all happened so fast, everyone was surprised. I had friends sublease my apartment, gave my new furniture and appliances to my sister who was just starting to live on her own and couldnt' afford anything and gave my car to my mom who was desperate for one at the time. It all worked out perfectly. I am coming back to the USA next month and had a great time here. My sister doesn't need the furniture anymore since she's moving in with a friend and my mom is purchasing a new car -- it really all worked out quite well.

I had it all. The cars, the women, the six figure bank balance but I gave it up to give something back teaching English to the poor little Korean kids because I'm just morally superior to you. That's why I came here. Wink

Did Asian studies in college and always wanted to see Asia. I preferred to be employed by a Western company engaging in outsourcing, but the market is over saturated as they're no longer hiring newbies to go on those international business trips doing something like cost analyst/negotiator for manufactured goods. I just stumbled on the ESL by mistake 3 years ago as a great entry level type job to get to do something in lieu of what I really wanted out of my career. As mom says, "take what you can get." No longer after college are you going to be under the wing of the senior executives grooming you to be the next super star career man. Well maybe a prince with a geography degree from an Ivy league uni can pull that one off. Confused

I came to Korea for a break! I wanted an easier and less stressful job and lifestyle. I wanted to save money and travel the world.

Working in New York City, I made $60k a year.. but with the high cost of living, I was only able to save $1,000 a month. Here in Korea, I work part-time essentially and can save just as much money with hardly any responsibilities, stress, or long commute. I have tons of vacation time and can travel anywhere I want. I have no real bills or worries.

My boyfriend (is 31 years old) and had just graduated college with his teaching certification in December. We came to Korea right away so he could start working immediately, save money and gain some teaching experience. With the job market at home... who knows how long he would have been unemployed.

We will have seen 10 countries by the time we return home, with a free ticket back, and plenty of money saved. In my opinion, coming here was one of the best decions I ever made...

People can say what they want about us (I've heard it all..) But IMO, the ones who are home, working miserable stressful jobs, living paycheck to paycheck with no savings, and worrying constantly about their job and financial security in this awful market are the real suckers...
