Here is a simple way to teach studets to talk and know where they are at.

1. level one students give one word answers or say nothing.
2. level two students give two or three word answers.
3. level 3 speak in broken sentences.
4. level 4 good sentences and use more than one sentence.

Method: level one

Show a video- stop it- make a mind map on the board- ask the students to tell you all the things they saw in the video. Help them with things they didnt know.

Method: level two- ask the students to describe all the thing they saw in the video. for example if there was a rabbit- he has long ears, big teeth, grey fur, two eyes ect.

method level 3: ask the studets to make up sentences about the things they described in level two. ex The rabbit has long ears and big teeth.

method level 4 : students make 5 - 10 sentences up for the video.

All exercises are writing and speaing as Korean students have very bad writing skills which makes it difficult for them to speak in proper sentences.

In a short time students progress from saying "tree", to saying " big green tree", to "I see a big green tree with people under it" to writing and speaking a paragraph about a video.

You can tell where the students are at by the responses they give and your job is to progress them to the next level.

I hope this helps some newbies.

Very simple but very affective method. I have used something similar myself. It is very affective and a great way for lower students (or students who lack confidence) to express their answers in more complete sentences.

In my classroom I have a big lettered sign at the front of the classroom saying: Speak in complete sentences. The Korean language is used by answering Nyea (yes) alot and it is difficult to break them out of that habit.

Be patient and train your students to do this and you will be surprised that they know that one word answers wont cut it with you and you will also find that other students in the class will respond when a student doesnt give a full answer.

Thats why I stop the video and ask for comments about what is on the screen. Today we watched Monsters inc. and the kids had to describe the two monsters.

I thought they came up with good descriptions for 1st year primary school.

I have been running this method at the primary and middle school levels for 4 months now and it had taken off in elemenatry school and had o.k. in middle school.
