Hi Everyone,
I bought a new HP laptop in America with Vista installed on it. I hate the software and want XP installed on it. Does anyone know of a company in the Seoul metropolitan area that will do this for me? If you could let me know, I would be extremely grateful.
Thanks,
Bryan |

I know this doesn't answer your question but what I suggest would be to turn of the UAC (user account control that thing that pops up when ever you install or change a program) and the auto indexing. Once these are turn off you might find that you don't hate it (I am guessing this is what you don't like).
If it is not this then what do you hate about it? |

Hi,
That's a GREAT tip and that's definitely something I hate about Vista. I also hate the fact that it runs programs slowly and it doesn't support my external hard drive. And for whatever reason, my old XP software/modem did a much better job at connecting and staying on wireless web connections.
Your suggestion is a start in the right direction and I definitely appreciate it. Thank you!

What size external harddrive are you running? a 2.5"? if so it may not be getting enough power. Do you have the "two usb ports to one" cable (two plug into the computer and one to the drive). This is a common problem with laptops, they put less power through the ports than a desktop.
How much ram are you running, vista is a bit of a ram hog, I would recommend at least 2 gig. Upgrading ram is cheap and easy (most of the time) |

Don't worry, get the RC for Windows 7 and wait until it comes out and upgrade then. Windows 7 is a definite improvement, i think the only worthy upgrade since XP. |

Make sure you have at least 2Gbs of ram to run Vista. Otherwise, expect sloth, slowness, lag.
I hate vista simply because it isn't intuitive or easy for searching for files. It really takes you to all sorts of different places to get your files...ugh... plus, plus , so much else.
but they overthought it. A VERY big problem when taking any test and developing anything new. I'm trashing mine , on my laptop, when I get home. I hope you still can get the beta version or developmental version of windows 7.
cheers,
DD

This is what I don't get...why do people have problems with the search feature? Don't you know where you put your files? If not, isn't that your problem for being stupid? I have all of my folders clearly marked and organized, I've NEVER used the search function in reality, except to show someone that I knew how to use it. |

a co-worker had a similar problem, bought a laptop (from E-Mart) with vista installed, problem was it was Korean vista - wanted to change it to an English operating system
went back to E-Mart to ask if they could change it to an English Window XP,
wasnt at the store, no idea what he said or if they understood, but he came back pretty much with the same thing
at work we tried formatting the computer, no luck ... tried to install XP, no luck
it seems you need a vista cd to format the vista operating system ... of course the cd wasnt provided when he purchased the laptop
so ... from that experience, my guess is that you need the vista cd to format/clear vista on the laptop ... then start anew with XP |

I have no problem organizing files or labeling them. The problem is the INTERFACE and thus, the speed of finding things. Too too many steps to get something. Yes, the search feature works better than before but that is about it..... Also, have you looked at the control panel? A mess, the icons and divisions of functions aren't intuitive at all nor named so any user might be able to follow the thinking of the person who put what applications where.
It is a disaster. Vista was not made from the users perspective but from a programmers view of what the user wanted. Loudly panned and it should be.
Plus, don't get me started on how Vista was / is the start of the computer watching you...there is so much "shyte" in there tracking so much - if only people knew.

Regarding your control panel issue, simply hit classic view which is on the left.
I disagree vista that vista was built for programmers, it was built for users, However it was built for 90% of users that turn on their computer, open their internet ( ), and open word and excel files It's designed for users that think the control panel is the power and rest switch.
I have had very few problems with upgrading to vista (even went the whole hog and got the 64bit system). Of the half dozen questions I had, windows help or the internet solved everyone |

Just to chime in that I'm another happy Vista user (over two years now) and have never had any problem with files/folders or using the search function.
I just think some people thought the way XP did everything is the way everything should be done. Any other way is wrong. Operating system conservatives. They don't like change.
I'm looking forward to upgrading to W7. I'm always happy to try out whatever is new. I had no qualms about ditching XP for Vista.....and I'll not hesitate to move on to W7.
Time marches on!! |

Thank you all for your input and for sharing your experiences with me. It looks like I'm going to have to suck it up and deal with Vista. If by chance someone knows of a company that can help me downgrade, the specs of my computer are as follows:
- Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
- Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T6400 (2.0GHz)
- FREE Upgrade to 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
- 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
- Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
- 16.0" diagonal High Definition HP Brightview Display (1366x768)
- LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
- Webcam Only
- Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card
- 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Thanks again for all your advice.
Best regards,
Bryan |
