Does anyone know what this area is like to live in in terms of things to do etc? Also, how long would it take to get to central Seoul from here? My search has been pretty fruitless so far. |

It's an old run down area of Seongnam. Not much to do there except hang out with some old 'rough around the edges' Koreans who drink and spit like it's going out of style. It's not very foreigner friendly.
It's just a few miles away from Bundang which is newer, richer, and has lots of western restaurants, bars, shops, etc. Lots of foreigners in Bundang. |

Thanks for the replies. I don't have a job yet but I've seen some advertised there and wondered what is was like in the area.
I have been to the area around Sanseong station when I was on holiday (the one before Namhansanseong) Do any of you know if it is similar to that area?
Thank you! |

Hey martyn_l, I've been offered a job near Dandaeogeori and wondered if there's any chance you could pm me please? I just wanted to ask a few questions about the area etc but I can't send one to you as I don't have enough posts, dang. |

I lived there for a year but that was my first year in Korea. Way back in 2000-2001.
Then it was very 'dynamic' but pretty rough around the edges. Millions of bars and restaurants, lively streets, techno pumping out of every other storefront.
Near Dandaeogeori is the Moran area. Famous for the biggest dog (for eating) market in Korea.
I spent many a pleasant summer night in that area eating out, drinking soju and watching ajeossi's fight in the street while the faint whiff of dog drifted by. |

Hi eamo, is it similar to sanseong-dong? I can see it's not too far away on a map and I've been there (8 years ago!). In fact, I saw some photo's credited to you on an old thread and i've actually been to the places in the photos! Most surprising.
I can handle the dog whiff and the fighting, Manchester isn't that different in these respects.

no worries martin_l, i'll try and rack up some posts. I was wondering what the average accommodation is like around there, or does it vary a lot? |

I'm sure Sanseong-dong would be very similar.
The only real variable in Korean cities is if the neighborhood is a high-rise area or a 'villa' area. High-rise being considered more desirable. |

In Dandaeogeori it's all high rise, I live in the appartment provided for me and its definetly far from anything special, but it's ok. I try and live a pretty active life so i'm not in it much anyway. As for costs etc i wouldnt have a clue. I've not ever wandered around Sanseong but i would assume it's all restaurants, shops and neon lights like the rest of the area. Is the job a public school or hagwon? |

It's a public school. I'm waiting for the contact details of the current teacher but as it's summer vacation, this is apparently proving difficult.
I'm just trying to over-prepare myself. I think i've heard enough horror stories now to expect the worst and be pleased for anything better. |

Sanseong-dong is NOTHING like the Namhansanseong / Dandaeogori area. Sanseong-dong is pretty secluded and is a tourist area with lots of traditional Korean restaurants for people who like to climb up Namhansanseong mountain. The area has it's own subway station. Namhansanseong is an old run down area with the vilest people I've met in Korea living in it. Dandaeogori is closer to Moran and has a department store and some western fast food places, but it's still a pretty run down place with a very "working class" feel to it.
If I had my choice, I'd avoid the area altogether. It's a horrible place to live for a foreigner. |
