"With the success of the television show Flipper in the 1960s, the popularity of dolphins soared and an industry was founded requiring the captivity of dolphins in aquariums and sea worlds. These dolphins are captured near a small town in Japan, but access to the area is forbidden. Why? Because the dolphins that aren't selected are then slaughtered, with this number estimated to be around 23,000 a year. The dolphin meat is then sold to the Japanese public and, unbeknown to them, it contains extraordinary high levels of mercury. Information about the slaughter and the subsequent consequences of selling the meat has been captured in a documentary, The Cove."
