Welp, here you go - prove it for yourself. It is also a fun test to give to Korean/Asian friends.

That was tougher than I thought it would be. I've lived in both Korea and Japan and am from Vancouver where there is a HUGE Chinese population. I thought I would do better.

My score, 10 out of 18

Oh well, at least it's above average Confused

PS some of the faces were distorted. However, I doubt it woulda made a difference.

It's an interesting test, but I believe you're right as well. Besides, there are other clues (hair style, clothes, demeanor) - beyond facial shape - that help make the ID.

I didn't score so well, but when you think about it, the test is presuming that all Chinese (or Japanese or Koreans) fit in one kind of look. I mean, I 'm no anthropologist. Aren't their differences within the group? Might as well try picking out the difference between a German, a Russian, and a Brit. I can tell when they open their mouth though.

I got 6. Thought I'd do better.

I guess if I picked randomly I would have done about the same.

I took this test ages ago. Like 8 months ago or something. I got a sucky score, but I rocked out when it came to the womenfolk. I'm horrible at telling the men apart over here.

I do remember one picture that had a dude who had some straight-up Japanese lanky-style action goin' down. Got that one wrong...

I bombed (6) but I don't think I'd ever claim to be able to tell the difference reliably based on physicality alone. I know a Japanese girl in my Korean class says Koreans themselves think she's Korean until she opens her mouth - ditto with the Chinese girl in my class. I think other than language the differences are more in style and demeanor than physical appearance. I know that on numerous occasions I've seen crew down the street and thought "Hey, Japanese crew" and they turned out to speak Japanese once I got close enough to hear...I just probably miss a bunch of others that aren't as obvious.

i thought the idea that all asians looked alike was just western ignorance (and i mean ignorance in the true sense, not offensively). but i asked my students and they say they can't really tell the difference either. they said sometimes they can look at a person and say "he looks chinese" for example, but they can't be sure. i guess it's the same as how we can say someone looks british, for example, but for the most part we all look the same and you could easily be wrong.
