My school anounced to us it was going bankrupt on Wednesday of last week, so nobody would be teaching there past February... eight days notice all around, not good. Gets rid of our Severence, and all that junk. He did offer to let us stay in our apartments till the end of march. And if we wanted to return back home, we could do so.. along with feb's wages.

Now this morning... he is now selling the hagwan to another chain. We will only be able to work part time at the place, and living arrangements are not included. WHAT DO I DO? Does anyone know what the heck is going on here, anyone ever experienced this... I really need some advice... other than leave the job and find a new one... im in the process of doing that now. Seeing as it is being Sold and Bankrupt-like laws are not applicable... what do I do?

If anyone has any clue please let me know.

I am sorry this has happened to you. As your school has been sold, your contract is no longer valid. It is time to look for a new job. Stay in the apartment and do some hunting.

My first school closed in similar style after 10 months. Fortunately i got paid all i was owed, and a % of my severance proportionate to the % of my contract worked...like wise I had 2 weeks notice.
Not to worry. you have accomodation- its a real blessing: use your time efficiently now to find a new situation quickly. Things get messy, and expensive once you have to move into a hostel and look for work....

As stated, you need to look for another job. He has sold the business, so he should pay you your final pay and if you have been there more than six months, pay in leiu of the thirty days notice he must give you or the difference. If he gave you 8 days notice, he must pay you for the other 22. You should also receive a percentage of your completion bonus, airfare is always a dicky one. Smile

I know someone in a similar situation who contacted efl-law, they advised him to pursue his severence, his return flight, and one-months notice pay. Don't know how close you are to the end of your contract but I'd say it's definetly worth checking out. Also, I've always been under the impression that your contract is with the school, not with an individual director, I'd check that out aswell.

good luck

you're in a great position.

you've garnered more experience. you're better equipped to find a great gig at a better school. this is why teachers are tied to contracts here - because they know otherwise we'd all keep going to better schools and drive the market skywards.

i envy you. i wish i could get fired tomorrow.
