For the divers out there, what are you favorite dive spots in Asia? I'm planning waaaaaaay ahead to next year's vacation. I plan on getting my certification and everything by the end of this year and hopefully planning a trip around diving for next year. Where would you suggest?

I know Palau is a great spot, Australia, and Indonesia. Anywhere else you can suggest? I've done Boracay and it was ok, but I know there's much more to see around this part of the world.

Check this site out.

not very broad. just asking for your preference. I'm asking for specific areas in Indonesia, Australia, etc. I'll do the research and everything after I get some responses

Palau is by far the best place I've ever dove. It's no wonder why it constantly gets ranked #1 for marine life in every dive mag, every year. It is also one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to topside!

Thank you. The dive instructor in Boracay told me the same thing. I'll probably be checking out Palau next year and their many shipwrecks.

I really like stepping off the steps at Yoido in to the Han. I have never had to buy a new battery for my car for example. And I get wire and springs stuff that I then sell to the metal scrapyard.
I also like diving off the coast at ChongNam as I get a lot of souvenirs like bottles with neat Chinese labels on them ... oh, and I made a neat jungle room in my house made with sunken fishing nets. And, then I sold a similar design to a nightclub in the states that wanted a new 'Pirates of the Caribbean' shipwreck theme.
So, diving around here really has been a 'treasure.'

Palau doesn't have many shipwrecks, at least it's not the main draw there. You might be thinking of Chuuk, another island in Micronesia, which is famous for its wreck diving.

The only think about Palau though is it can be expensive. The diving alone will cost you about $100 per day. There are some cheap motels (Tree D Hotel is decent) for about $40 per day. Add food, beer and misc. with that and it can get close to $200 per day. But it's all worth it!

Went to Borneo for a few weeks in June, looking for a piece of beach to sprawl on and read a ton of bad fiction. Ended up in what turns out to be one of the highest-rated dive sites in the world (at least according to the throngs of hard-core, very experienced divers who flocked there) - Sipadan. You stay at nearby Mabul island, then dive at Sipadan. We were first-timers and may have spoiled ourselves, with heaps of giant turtles, barracuda, shark, giant groupers, rockfish, a million colours of coral, and a host of other strange-looking critters. Not cheap, but incredibly worth it.
