It seems Westerners have always found Korea an unpleasant, unwelcoming place...
Jack London said, in 1904:
...the first weeks of a white traveler on Korean soil are anything but pleasant. If he be a man of sensitive organization he will spend most of his time under the compelling sway of two alternating desires. The first is to kill Koreans. The, the second is to commit suicide.

Jack always was pretty tetchy, though, to be fair.
Cool quote. |

No Racist sentiments in that guy:

| The menace to the Western world lies, not in the little brown man; but in the four hundred millions of yellow men should the little brown man undertake their management." |

David, a Dutch gentleman named Hendrick Hamel beat Mr. London to it by at least 200 years:

| Quote: |
| With regard to the moral standards, it has to be said that the Koreans are not very strict when it comes to mine and thine, they lie and cheat and that's why they can't be trusted. They are proud if they have cheated somebody and they don't think that's a disgrace. That's why they can undo the buy of a horse or a cow even after four months if it becomes clear that the buyer has been cheated. But the sale of a parcel ground or other immovable goods can only be undone if the conveyance has not taken place yet. |
-- From the diary of Hendrick Hamel, translated from Dutch, circa 17th century.
(Sounds a lot like Lonestar....) |

| However, Cspedes wasn't the first westerner to enter Korea. This was a man to which Korean sources refer to as "Pingni" or "Mari," who landed together with some Chinese on Cheju-do in spring of 1582. He was immediately deported to China. But Hamel was the first to write about Korea from within. |
-- Also from notes on the page with Hamel's Journal... |

"Coreans are the emptied-headed, most childlike, and generally foolish people among civilised nations."
"Some day American syndicates will get hold of her... and her crimes against common sense will be expiated."

We in our turn, tried to make him clear that we came from Korea. That we were shipwrecked thirteen years ago and since then stayed in Korea. And that we tried now to go to Nagasaki to join our countrymen.
We were very relieved that the reception was so friendly. The Koreans had fooled us with telling us that every foreigner who sets foot on Japanese soil, immediately was beaten to death. From this one can see how many nonsense several nations told about each other. |
- Hamel's Journal, after escaping from Korea to Japan.
and this gem, which is the first recorded "midnight run":
| Quote: |
| We fled with eight men, because we knew that the king would never let us go. We rather risked death than live for the rest of our lives in that country. |
