Why do some people in Korea like to complain about things being dirty, but then they would just cough or sneeze without covering their mouth/nose with their hand? |

Man, step into the public toilets... Then see how many people [Mod Edit] without washing their hands. I'd say it's about 35% hand washers. Hell, some places don't even have a place to wash your hands.
Then, go ask your students (any age) what they think of China, Taiwan, Vietnam etc etc. "Bery Bery dirty!" |

Hong Kong at least has signs up saying how bad it is if you spit in public, because it spreads germs. Spitting is supposed to be illegal in Korea, but it's one of those laws that are just overlooked. |

HK has outlawed spitting since the late 80s. I vaguely remember there being a huge campaign to teach people about it (I was 7 or 8 at the time).
The thing about Korea is that they have all these laws, but people are not aware of them. They impose them but only enforce them half-heartedly. So people are often confused about what they can and cannot do.
But I do agree that Korea has some pretty *interesting* interpretation of what cleanliness is... |

After my first visit to the gym here I didn't shower in the communal shower, and just went home. (Back home, people rarely shower at the gym.) The staff were shocked about it, so I was a good foreigner and did what they wanted me to do. And then this one time, I saw this lady sit on her haunches in the shower... doing absolutely nothing. I could swear she was peeing.
Kids pee in gutters if they are out walking and can't find a toilet (I have seen a girl without her panties and her mommy standing there by her!!!!). So I guess this lady thought the shower drain will take care of it. Asian toilets! |

There are many Korean people who throw trash on the sidewalks. It happens frequently on garbage collection days.

So 35% seems to not too far off of U.S. males:
http://www.health.state.mn.us/handhygiene/stats/fairstudy.html
Average observed hand washing was 30%, 39%, and 51% among males at events 1, 2, and 3 respectively. |

An observational study was carried out to collect baseline data and to assess the impact of signs on hand washing among public restroom users. The study was carried out between June 2003 and September 2004 at three large events held on the Minnesota state fairgrounds.
The study was conducted in Minnesota. You distorted the facts when you wrote "So 35% seems to not too far off of U.S. males." |

I was walking down a little street here in this "gun' where I live. It's decent sized, has a Nike store and a dunkin donuts, etc. But a lot of small streets with old houses. As I neared a line of cars on the left (parked) suddenly a middle school student just sort of rose up out of nowhere and looking a bit awkward walked out onto the street passing me going the other direction. I thought it was strange but they often crouch around talking on their cell phones, hiding from classmates, etc.
But when I looked over to where she had been crouching there was a huge pile of crap. When I saw it I realized that as she rose up she had been sort of tugging at something (pulling up her drawers most likely).
Now, if it had been a boy, I would have thought nothing of it. Boys do stuff like that. but this was a pretty, normal looking 14 year old girl.
I guess she just couldn't hold it. |

Well, why would a Korean care if he/she gives you germs if they don't know you? You don't exist to them as a stranger, thus they don't care about you. Do you worry about coughing on ants? |

There are tenants that throw their garbage on the sides of streets prior to city workers collecting garbage. |

Why do some people in Korea like to complain about things being dirty?
Because people treat the main street where I live like a garbage dump. There are no rubbish bins so everything gets thrown on the footpath including copious amounts of advertising fliers (deliberately). Then there are spots along the street where the local businesses create huge piles of half open rubbish bags containing food waste which inevitably spills out on to the street. There is a permanent sticky mess in these spots that gives off a foul stench in the summer. To top it off I saw a rat amidst one of these rubbish piles the other morning on my way to work. I kid you not. I must emphasize this is not some backstreet or ghetto suburb but one of the main streets in the busiest part of the city I live in and it has a lot of foot-traffic.
I think the situation is shameful and now that Korea is an advanced nation it could be doing a lot better. Rubbish bins are not that expensive. The cost could also be covered by a enforcing a fine on all the litterers. |

Reminds me of Running with Scissors, when the boy took a dump under the piano. |
