I have read elsewhere in the forum, that teachers should refuse to pay housing deposits. Is this advice only for those working at Hagwons or applicable to public schools as well? Does anyone have experience with paying rental deposits to GEPIK? Any advice appreciated.

It is all dependant on how crazy you feel that day.

As you are not responsible for the last persons unpaid bills the school takes money from you to cover anything you bail on.

Make sure that it is not an outrageous fee, however as more refugees come over the coverage will rise. If you dont trust the school then ensure that you well document the condition of the place with timestamp photos when you move in.

rental deposits

(Below only refers to GEPIK, not hagwons or other parts of Korea.)

What exactly do you mean? In Korea, they have something called "key money" which is like a security deposit. You put up around 5-10 million won (5-10 thousand dollars). You get this at the end of the contract period. The more you put up, the lower the rent.

There is also a 900,000 won deposit you give the schools. The schools will take out 300,000 for the first three months. This is also paid back at the end of the contract period.

I have only seen one being used at a time. So, you should make sure which deposit they are asking for. I would only opt for the second one.

Public schools tend to be more trustworthy on that score. Keep your apartment clean and you should be good to get it all back.

Hakwons are more iffy. It's 50/50 at best.
