I was sitting on the subway today minding my own business when some old guy came up to me and started talking in Korean. To be fair, I realized several minutes after this one-way conversation that I was sitting in one of the seats designated for the old, handicapped, mothers, etc. Anyway, after I told him I don't speak English (I think even if they don't know English, they'll understand that you only speak English just by you saying that) his tone got louder and he started hitting me in the legs with his cane until I stood up. As soon as I stood up, he quickly slid behind me and stole the seat.

Is it normal for people (old people, specifically) on the subway to be so rude? Seriously, if there was a Korean version of that movie "Grumpy Old Men" he'd be the leading actor (only this guy wouldn't need to act).

Rude? If there was a Korean version of the movie "the Jerk", you'd be Steebuh Mahtin.

You were sitting in clearly marked reserved seating, and he tried communicating with you, hoping you'd clue in to what you were doing. You DID finally clue in and yet continued to sit there instead of giving the seat up to an elderly man with a cane.

He tapped you on the leg to point out you need to be physically handicapped to sit there.
What do you expect him to do, draw a picture? Give you money?

I would expect him to be civil. He was out of line, period the end.

I wouldn't be in that situation, so it's a moot point, but if an old man put his hands on me, or a weapon for that mastter, it'd give me permission to do the same.

Surprisingly Korea still has a fair amount of respect for elders, and I regularly see young people getting up for elders if there aren't any seats available in the designated ones. Its expected, that is the way the system goes. Sure there are some that don't, but I'd say the majority of times I see old people getting a seat.

You knew you were sitting in a designated seat and still failed to move. If you'd been Korean he might have smacked you harder than that.

I wonder if the old man does the same thing to the 40-45 year old men who regularily sit in those seats while 65-75 year old ladies have to stand.

I like it when old people fight on the train. They can throw hard punches.

Dude, you are obviously wrong - stop whining. You sat in a clearly marked handicapped only area, you basically showed disrespect and were rude before he even started talking to you. He's an elderly man for pete's sake, you gonna beat him up because he tapped you on the leg with his cane? WOW, what a jerk.

I bet you're one of those people that park your car in the handicapped spot just so you don't have to walk the extra 100 ft. Twisted Evil

last year I saw two newspaper guys get in a fight. Both of them looked well into their 70s (which since they're korean means they're over 100). One found a neatly stacked pile and apparently thought it was free for the taking. As he picked it up and was making his way to the other end of the train the owner came back onto the car and went flying through the car screaming and did a kind of flying punch. There was a lot of yelling and hitting and he got his papers back.

I clearly stated that I didn't realize until after I had gotten up. If I had known I'd have moved. Also, he didn't tap me with it so much as he whacked me with it. Please stop making me out to be a bad guy. I'll admit I shouldn't have sat there, but it isn't like I knew what I was doing until afterward. The reason I probably didn't notice was because I had been so incredibly tired from walking all day (to the point of almost falling asleep) so I just sat down in the first seat I saw. Also, this was my first time ever using the Korean subway so cut me some slack.

He probably had to walk forty miles through rice paddies and dirt to go to his run down, unheated, miserable school house then spend all of his evenings toiling at some kind of work or another while he was growing up. If he's old enough he might have been conscripted too.

You probably complained about missing the bus and having to blow in your Nintendo cartridges growing up.
Plus you made a mistake.

So, Old Man = 1, You = 0.

Do people not have manners any more? If you're physically able, you should stand and allow elderly people to have the seats. Jesus, how badly did your parents bring you up? Regardless of whether it was a disabled/elderly seat, you should still have given up your seat.

My wife is preggo, and I told her she should start sitting in those side seats, but she refused until she shows more. She said that old people will swat her if they think she shouldn't be there.

As I mentioned, I was practically falling asleep and when the guy hit me with his cane I was in that hazy sort of stage when you are half asleep. I consider myself a good person, and if I had a few more seconds before the guy had me stand up, I would have done so of my own initiative.
