I'm talking to a recruiter about working in Gimje and living in Jeonju.
Does anybody have any experience with either area? |

Remember "Cohiba's Rule" (Now better than ever!):
Think twice before you live outside of Seoul. "In Seoul" and
"outside of Seoul" are like two different countries. Seoul
is an interesting place with variety and venues for most
tastes. Outside of Seoul you will find a homogeneous Korean
culture. I don't mean this in a bad way, but you will never
find things like: French, Greek, Indian or any other ethnic
foods. Markets that sell sherry, pate, pastrami, ricotta cheese.
Specialty shops that sell Cuban cigars, European pies, cold
cuts or rye breads. Just to name a few things.
The FFF RULE: FFF=Fun For Foreigners.
If FFF in Seoul = 100, then FFF decreases at
1/distance. So 2km from Seoul FFF=1/2(100)=50;
10km from Seoul FFF=1/10(100)=10. This rule is
a rule for nightlife, food and foreign products only.
Nature etc. is on a different scale altogether.
This means you will be wasting a lot of time commuting
to Seoul. This is especially a drag if you have been
boozing on a Friday night and there are no buses or
trains.
I, unfortunately, live near Seoul where the FFF factor
is almost in the negative range. I know! |

I live in Jeonju
it's a big city with 600000 people and very convenient. However it is hard to find other foreigners. |

Man, just go to Deep Into 1, or Deep Into 2, and you will find foreigners aplenty!

homey, if you live in jeonju and will be working in gimje, i think that is a long commute for you. it is about 40 minute bus ride. it costs about 7000 to 8000 won each way.
i am currently working and living in gimje. everything here could be reach on foot. |

I'm currently talking to Avalon English located in Jeonju. I've heard bad things about Avalon, but as long as I get paid, I have no problem doing the work. However, I would go absolutely nuts if I lived in a city with no nightlife. It seems a decent sized city of 600,000 so it can't be terrible, but I don't want to end up working hard all day and then going out at night with a bunch of married couples/older folks(or not going out at all). Is there a decent 20something crowd of locals/foreigners in Jeonju to keep me sane? Also, I'm not a "party animal" and I don't expect to be getting wasted every night, but going out and having a pint somewhere that is not a church or retirement home certainly adds to quality of life in my opinion. |

I just moved to Jeonju two weeks ago. I'm living on sort of the outskirts so I have to take a cab to get anywhere decent, but it still isn't expensive. It is alright, there are movie theaters with movies in English, shopping and yeah the foreigner bars (which I have yet to make it to). Besides the other teachers at my school I haven't seen many other foreigners just walking around.
Life seems a bit more quiet here but it is manageable. I don't know what Seoul is like though. |

I will say that, for some odd reason I can't understand, most of my better friends over the years have been Daegu people that moved to Seoul. I wonder if it has something to do with them being not so "big city", and maybe more like people from my hometown area back home.
One of the biggest mistakes we foreigners make in Korea is forgetting that Koreans differ greatly based on where they grew up. It's far too easy to generalize if you live in Seoul. |

Yes, and there is even some tension and resentment between some of the provinces, specifically between Jeolla and Gyounsang. And I have heard that from Korean friends in both provinces. Jeolla natives feel like they are always getting the short end of the stick politically. |
